Remodeling my Master Bath
#22863740 - 02/04/16 01:30 PM (7 years, 11 months ago) |
|

I am currently working totoward remodeling my master bathroom (actually my GFs house but we both lived here since she bought it).
Currently taking down the drywall slowly since i am using my small trashcan to dispose of the old bath materials.
I currently have 32" x 8ft 10in of space inside the master bath that im debating on how to use. The rest of the bathroom layout is correct (as in the toliet stays in its general location, and so does the vanity, just a new one replacing it).
In this space, I want to put at least a shower and possible a bath or combo of both.
i definitely want a walk-in shower, not sure if i want a tub too.
Im not too sure what to do. Maybe u guys can help me descide on what to do with this space?
*Edit: Photos.
Teaser photo: original electrical, taken Feburary 2016
Old double vanity on left, mirror was ours, some drywall taken down. pic showing the wiring of their electrical.

Am I reading those dimensions right? 32" by 8'-10"? IS that the entire footprint of the bathroom?

I think you need to decide whether you want just a shower or a tub/shower combo or a tub with walls/panels. Kind of makes a difference.
I put in a neo angle prism lux all glass shower enclosure in the master bath and it looks really cool. Very heavy glass walls and a bit tricky to install with the base but nice. The 45 degree angle worked well in my space. I think I got the 32" one so that would work well for you.

Just find out or figure out the dimensions of what kind of what kind of toilet/sink/shower you want then make some drawings.
You're probably going to need to get in a plumber, electrician, carpenter, drywaller, and painter Unless you can do it yourself.
You might need to open up the floor or ceiling on the floor below depending on how your pipes are laid out. Drywall is cheap though.

Im shocked people in the shroomery would be doing home improvements. Usually people who use psychedelics don't give a shit about what their house looks like. I guess get it looking good for the set and setting.

Some people like to clean their room or house before a trip cause the mess bothers them while they trip. I know the feeling.
I will be updating this thread soon, ive got some work done and took some pics

We just finished the bathroom in another house. Put in a new tub/shower, installed hardiboard on the walls, then primed textured primed again and painted with semi-gloss ProClassicTM. Damn that's some bullet proof paint went oil based over latex primer. Put in new water heater with relief valve piping to the outside just in case. Put in new LG stacked washer and dryer in front of the water heater. Had to expand the existing door so put in a pocket door instead nice and wide and opens things up.
When we started, the existing toilet was literally filled with crusted over shit, and they had two five gallon buckets with toilet seats on them filled up with shit and piss.

Seriously. Biggest improvements, ever. Now, I need to dig where I think my water leak on the gravity system is, which oddly enough (or perfectly sensical) is at the top. It froze, I'm gonna dig till I find the split elbow.

Yeah, i learned recently that copper water lines are bad for cold, temperate areas.
Its best to use PEX cause it expands and contracts with the temps.
Also, before u pour concrete on your new pipe, cover the pipe in a nice layer of fine sand.

Is that to allow for the expansion of the pex? or is it to allow for ground shifting/movement?

Protects the pipe from sharp gravel. AKA dont cover pex or copper pipe with gravel. Could cause a punture.

Electrical / New:
 - for left vanity plug

Electrical is done, just need to install the switches and outlets. Im running everything off of one circuit. I hope i dont overload it.
My original plan was use one circuit just for the heater and the other circuit for all the other lights and stuff but theres only one electrical circuit to the bathroom. Im not sure how to go from the panel to the master bath with all the walls in place

If I understand you correctly then you need to get into your house's attic crawlspace, you can feed the wires directly down inbetween the walls inside the crawlspace. Be careful working with the panel bro. I'm not an electrician, just done ghetto remodels a few times, been shocked a lot.

nice.
But i would do a different tile style myself. Our bath will have a glass wall with a door perhaps. Not sure.
And yes, im being careful with the electrical wiring.

Looking good so far.
What is the metal handy box for? The one with 2 12-2's going into it? It's too small. Even if it is just a j-box it isn't big enough. Those boxes are used when no other box will fit. The connectors you have in the boxes are backwards too.
I'm almost done with my bathroom. Just waiting on a door and a few small things. I did everything myself too. From the sub floor to finishing. Here's a couple pics.

damn dudd! Very nice
Yeah, im actually going to redoing the electrical there in that box. Ive descided to run two seperate 12's guages from the main panel to the bathroom. The heater and all the lights/fans need their own circuits. Im going to leave that box as a junction box for the closet lights.
Im a long way away from a nice finished bath, but its nice to see yours got done!

You can run 14 gauge wire for the lighting and 12 for the outlets. The lighting should be on a 15amp arc fault breaker and the outlets on a standard 20amp breaker. What kind of heater are you using? How many amps is it?
Change that metal box to a bigger box. You will regret it later if you don't.

Heater is a 1000watt 120 volt can heater.
And yeah, im going to run wire direct from the heater and the outlets to the circuit breaker instead of dealing with the handy box.
Do u think it would overload it if i put 3 lights, 2 outlets and one overhead fan on one 20amp cicuit?

No, it wouldn't overload the circuit and it is probably ok as long as you aren't getting it inspected. The professional way to do it is to use a 15amp circuit for the lighting and a separate 20amp circuit for the outlets and another separate 15amp circuit for the heater.

man nice job on the remodel! your bathroom looks kickass!
I have to admit that with guilt i checked the dates on your posts and breathed a sigh of relief. we are redoing my wifes bathroom right now, and it has taken us just about a year. We are probably a few months out still, it has been a rough experience. no wonder people charge $15000 for that shit.

Yeah, currently our bath is on pause. Its a little more difficult than I imagined it to be.
Still need to install a window then work on the shower.
Currently, Im making a concrete pad for a future hot tub. Its been fun, learning a lot about how to do concrete from this awesome How-To book called "Better Homes and Garden - Masonry and Concrete". Just finished tamping, next is making the forms.
I plan on working on the bathroom again after finishing this concrete slab.

Just make sure you apply a good waterproof membrane in your shower area. I find two coats of polyurethane works well. But you have to then make sure you use a tile adhesive that will stick to that.

Update (finally! lol):
I made a deal with my GF that i would make "major progress" in one month and if i did, we could go to the Oregon Eclipse Festival. So thats my current motivation right now. Just gotta suck it up and do this work.
She doesnt want to go the festival but i really really want to, so that should be motivation enough to get some work done.
My work planned is installing the two windows, ripping out the sub floor and then finishing the plumbing under the house and change some electrical stuff. Basically get it all done for drywall. A lot to do, wish me luck.
I may post pics when i make some progress....

I've been using the Hardipanel 4x8 sheets with the cedar look. About 38 bucks a sheet. You might want to check that out. Sheetrock sucks although the Hardi is a little tough to cut. One thing for sure if you get it wet you won't stress we had a water leak put that stuff in the shower area no problemo. You can't say that with greenboard. God I hate fucking sheetrock. Doing my whole house in the Hardi board and batten it's such a good product won't burn won't rot and is water proof.

If your tired of the score and break method of cutting, they make a inexpensive circular saw blade specifically for hardi type product. (The red brand comes to mind. Diablo?)

Hardieboard is hard to finish. Why would you do your whole house with it? Your inside walls don't need to be waterproof and drywall doesn't rot. Hardie would cost a lot more too.

I did the shower/bath area with it. It's not that hard to finish, and had I used sheetrock the water leak would have completely toasted it. The hardi, no problem. The rest of the inside is mostly knotty pine. I'm doing the exterior with it.

We have used a lot of Diablo Demon Demo type blades which I got two for one price of 15 bucks so 7.50 a blade at Home Depot. Also recently tried a concrete blade that seems to work well. They also have 60 buck special blades for cutting it but I've heard other than a clean cut they don't last any longer.

Damn, its been a minute! Time sure flies, especially when u dont wanna work and procrastinate like a mofo
Heres a photo update of what I did to the mainline plumbing.
Part I:
Old plumbing waste line.
Another shot, showing the water lines above.
This toilet flange was mutha fuka to get off!
New Line on the right, old one in the background.
Close-up of the old line.
Had to replace the toliet flange in the other, small bathroom because of the new 3" waste line.

Part II.....

Part II:
Floor torn out, new plumbing.

Close-up.
Above-shot of the new waste line.

Picture of the leaking shower stall from the other, smaller bathroom. As u can see, it ruined the 2x4 framing. Not good.
Above-shot of the new toliet waste location.

More updates to come....

I think mine took about a month with me doing all the work. I did it up really fancy so I couldn't rush too much. At the same time it was our only bathroom and we were showering at the gym so I had to rush a little.

I made some progress a few weeks ago. Worked on putting holes for plumbing on several panels of greenboard drywall. I havent worked much on it cause its Summer and Ive been having a blast every weekend.
Eventually i will get back to it, probably work on it this month.

I missed this thread somehow.
Great work.
I can't wait to see the final results.
Was the electric work tough?

wow, and i thought i was slow, i remodeled our entire house this year, took less than six months by myself, all new bathroom with tile shower, all new kitchen with live edge bar top and recessed lighting, three bedrooms with new doors and windows, all new flooring throughout, major fixes and upgrades, did every little thing imaginable except the roof, i even demoed the outbuildings and sheep fencing, now we are moving and i will probably have to do it all again at the new place
