questions about bulk substrate and casing
    #22861713 - 02/03/16 10:12 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Okay so I've been looking around for an answer to my question but havent seem to find the answer so I was wondering this, I'm about to spawn rye grain to a hpoo,  do I put the casing ontop of the sub right away and just let it all colonize together or do I wait for the substrate to colonize then case it then wait for the casing to start colonizing before I fruit?

You can do it all 3 ways. A lot of people are having great success and saving time by casing and fruiting at spawning.
I like to case at spawning for time's sake. And i heard recently that commercial growers are starting to do the same

I've never bothered with casing for cube grows, but I think generally you let the substrate colonize and put it into fruiting conditions.  I guess you could think of it in PF Tek terms, you basically "case" the cake when you roll it in vermiculite.

So when I spawn the grain to the sub in my trays I can just let it colonize then fruit it without adding a casing?

What would be the recommended way to case?

Yes. Unless you're doing a pe variety, as a casing is beneficial to it

A 1/4" layer of coir/verm. It doesn't have to be heat treated,
but it's always good to save a little leftovers from when you spawned your tub, saves time and materials.

You can fruit the tub right away after casing. The whole idea is to provide a microclimate at the surface level,
not for the mycelium to digest it. Make sure it stays relatively moist and you'll be seeing pins in no time. :goodluck:

I used to use straight jiffy mix and loved it. Then their quality went to shit.
So switched to 50/50 coir/course verm.
But now I've switched to this:

awesome! thank you for letting me know I'm doing two trays for sure so maybe I can do one with a casing and one without a casing? I have plenty of spawn to work with, two quart jars of rye grain colonized by Costa rica cubes.

:whathesaid:RR used to talk about casing at spawning or even halfway through colonizing

My own personal experience with casing would seem to indicate that sooner is probably better, to avoid side pins.

I've only done shoebox size minitubs so far, but every one has massively side-pinned, and liners don't seem to make a difference.  Next round I'm planning to case at spawn time.

I only mentioned liners because that's the typical advice given about side pins.  I'm saying it doesn't matter if you use a liner or not, if you case too late.

I do not case any of my subs, yet I do not get side pins.

Why? Because I use liners.

If the liner sticks to the sides of the substrate as the sub shrinks, it will eliminate the microclimate that side pins love.

Liner = No side pins ; Regardless of if the sub is cased or not.
