Avoiding the dreaded facepalm in cultivation * 42
    #22861379 - 02/03/16 08:55 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

How to avoid facepalm and butthurt in the mushroom cultivation forum.

Okay all you new people this is one for you. The writeup on avoiding butthurt and facepalms in cultivation. I had contemplated writing this for a while but as it's a touch off topic and possibly a catalyst for further butthurt I held off. But the hurt in mush cult seems to be rising lately so I figure what the hell, this is needed. So here she goes

:smbfacepalm: 1.

First what we need to do is make what I think is the intention of most of the regular posters here clear. This is a place of learning and personally I think it's amazing how much good solid info, based in science is posted here daily. It's what sets us apart from YouTube and reddit. This means that to keep that level and quality of information presented up to that standard we need to ensure a certain consistency. This means bad info must be corrected and good info agreed with. As this is a fairly new discipline there are still things we don't understand and discussion and disagreements will happen. That is fine and healthy.

However if people come in spouting off outdated or simply incorrect information it will be crushed by those trying to preserve the integrity of the information of the board. This is not personal and should not be taken as such. If it is taken personally we then run into butthurt facepalm territory. The solution is simple, don't talk out of your ass and no one will facepalm you. Of course we all talk out of our asses on occasion and we all will be called on it. No reason to let it ruin your day.

:picdidnthappen: 2.

Because we are trying to establish a reasonable facsimile of scientifically backed understanding of the organisms we are attempting to cultivate some level of accountability needs to be had. Granted no one is expecting a link to a peer reviewed piece for every claim or commonly understood thing however, if you are going to say you grew cubes off of a wool sweater or that you had a cake pull 35 flushes because you dunked it in bleach, something must be provided to demonstrate that you are simply not some troll. Back up your statements wherever possible. If you are going to tell people that you have done something outlandish, then a photo is great. If you are going to try and tell people FAE is less important than 100% RH then a paper explaining why would be a good way to avoid stuff. But just coming into a thread claiming that you increased your potency by adding reeses pieces to the sub without something proving it is a guaranteed way to get laughed out of here.

:takingnotes: 3.

UTFSE. Use the fucking search engine before you post. This applies two ways. First is if you are having problems with really basic questions. Type your query into the engine and read through a few dozen posts that come up. Learn from those. You will appear smarter when you have a rudimentary understanding of whats going on. The Second way this applies is if you have some epiphany about growing on your dogs droppings or how people think your space age air pump in an aquarium with LED lighting and 3 hygrometers is going to do. Chances are its already been asked and facepalmed a dozen times a month. If you are certain you can pull a zip from dog doo or get a canopy in a PMP, then rather than ask and argue about it, go and do it. Then post the pics. People here respond better to doing than talking about doing.

:havesomescience: 4.

Learn the basics before you start to engineer shit on your own. Nothing elicits a facepalm faster than someone with 8 weeks reading and a handful of tubs under the belt coming up with a paradigm changing method that we are supposed to switch over to. Learn the basics to the scientific method, and test things in a controlled manner. If you are wanting to run experiments then the first thing you need is to get your ass some isolates or at least stabilized clones. Don't try to tell me about how your method outperforms all others without at least a few side by sides in a controlled manner. Also don't tell me about how you plan to do something stupid and then turn around and call it an experiment. If its ms, if its not controlled, or if the sample size is small then its not an experiment. While out of the box thinking is good sometimes and can deliver unexpected and game changing results, its unlikely that you will accidentaly discover something on purpose. Pouring spores over turds in a field isn't an experiment, its not even really an observation. When children make magic potions out of hose water and lawn clippings its cute. When adults do that its retarded.

:douchewink: 5.

Check the ego at the door. Most growers here have little ego regarding this stuff, they burnt it away with hero dosing. Well maybe not  However, while you might be super proud of your latest tek/discovery you still need some humility. Also understand that curt responses are not meant to hurt your feelings and make you cry. Its usually just that we are on a phone and can't get the damn smiley to work right. Toughen up a bit as well. Shit, most people here are committing felonies. Crying and being sad won't help you in jail, why the fuck do you think its gonna earn you respect in here? Maybe if a bunch of people think your idea is stupid or won't work well, perhaps you should examine why that is. Too often people just get pissed off or whine to the mods. If you are that sure your way is the shit, then do it and prove the haters wrong. Just remember that you need pics, or it didn't happen :smirk:

:mindblown: 6.

Finally understand that much of whats posted is opinion. However its hard to have an objective opinion on something you have never done before. But opinion is still something we are all entitled to and sometimes we need to agree to disagree. I will argue that GLC is the most inferior method of liquid inoculate. Its my opinion and I am entitled to it. Funny thing is that I have actually had really good success with it, yet its still not my jam. Someone else may really like it and have their own reasons for liking it. Who is right? Well we both are. At the end of the day, fruits in hand is the goal.

Okay I am done here. But for all you new people (and some older ones) these are things that I think we need to keep in mind when posting here. If you don't think that these things are reasonable then this is for you.

:huxleyfacepalm:

Is the realest Shit I have read all day.

LOL PASTYS KIDS MAKE GRASS MAGIC POTIONS! CUTE!!!!

I think I have gotten 6-9 face palms for various posts. When I get them many times I just let it roll off my back like a duck because I know in my heart the ideas were Straight DOPE! Then after closer examination on a few of them, I realized I was being a DOPE ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Ohhhh on my self Ojhhhhhhhhhhh!! OHhhhhhhhh!!!

Okay yeah I will stop cracking Ohhhhhs on myself... My first 290 or so posts I thought of some crazy thing, Then did a search and if it had not been asked about I posted a new thread. Then I started selling PF tek jars commercially, that is when I came up with some no downside cut corners.

Enough of this and constant thinking on a subject will make any determined person come up wit new and REAL ideas. at the age of 17 I had an article written about an insane thing I did titled "They said it couldn't be done."

Even though I have been face palmed I think it has made me a better cultivator. Also everyone seems to think I am an Odd mofo Dunno, I don't feel odd. I have gotten You`re weird or odd my whole life. Guess it might be true.

Seriously though I wanna say there are no dumb questions...........

But there are.

Read, look at the pretty pictures, read a little more. Follow the tek exactly, 57% of us are assholes but the fun kind- consider it initiation and acceptance if we rag on you.

After you read and see the pretty pictures then come post your stupid question. We were all noobs at first and probably asked stupider questions than you have.

Where i work sent out a list of company "certifications" that they want you to pick one out of and complete before your next evaluation. I picked verbal legal dictation since im of course super professional and wear a suit and stuff. So I'm working on my dictation skills with this particular post, having someone else type it out for me so I have to ask you guy's opinion on how well I'm doing.

How's my dictate?

nice outline of the playbook pasty:cool:

posting pictures for claims is really important IMO.

We shouldn't take ourselves and our ideas so seriously that we flip out when there is a disagreement.  the mushrooms don't care if u used a loop or a blade to swipe their spores, or whether you bucketed or pasteurized your coir, they care that thru the entire progress, from start to finish, an entire chain of events somehow went well enough that they could triumphantly emerge and do their thang :mushroom2:

I love it when I see first-time posters use the word "science" in the thread! That always means they are going to receive the facepalm award of the day. Those threads are a lot of fun to read, just to see how the noob in question won't listen to anyone no matter how reasonable the answers are or even if a TC is helping them.
Here you can see an instance if you want to have a blast :hehehe:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22853352

Then they disappear, never to be seen again.

Edit: I added two links but the second turned out to be a nice bloke after all.

For me the only mistake is when the people who are corrected feel offended and butthurt instead of learning from what others are trying to teach them.

It is not a mistake to ask the most stupid questions, but it is a mistake to try an defend that for which you are trying to receive an answer when you post. That's my opinion.

But what I said is pure common sense
You don't need to read rules to know that, but apparently there are people who don't see that.

Nah, some came to this site knowing nothing lurked for a long time, researching and reading for months completing successful grows before ever making an account instead of expecting to be spoon fed. Everyone makes mistakes and learns from them, some learn from others mistakes by research and avoids a lot of problems.

Spot on! If someone is truly interested they'd take the trouble of reading like maniacs before even asking questions. Posting questions should be done IMO to polish what you've learn on your own.

Naw man its not that at all. Re-read the OP.

:wtfsonic: I sure hope not, the point of this is not for anyone to feel the need to facepalm people, rather it's to bridge the gap between those needing to learn and those who volunteer to teach. I'm tired of hearing people say we aren't shroomy enough, that means that there is a breakdown in communication somewhere.

Honestly I have never seen anyone get called a fucking moron on these boards regardless of the validity of that assessment. But people do get tough on people and some people take it too much to heart.

I guess what the TL;DR of the OP is this; no one is paid to be here and we are all trying to ensure that at the end of the day people walk away with a box full of shrooms. We all do our part to make that happen. So by being oversensitive or argumentative the only person being left out is the one refusing to learn.

I got a few facepalms when I started posting since I was researching the archives before reading new stuff being posted. That set me back quite a bit and I still see people linking teks from 10 years ago or setups that were just small experiments by users who never repeated or posted again.

Personally they had me sklonked up tighter than a synthetic zanoit sterilizer bed compressor tube enlarger on garbage day.

I'm looking for a new drug hobby myself. I love my opiates but just can't get em anymore so I settle for Xanax. So I do REALLY stupid shit on Xanax, I tend to lose money, a whole lot of money. Last year it was like 8k gambling over 2 days I think, I don't remember hardly any of it so needless to say I'm not going back that road.

So I can't grow mushrooms for shit. Who wants to make the video "let's grow poppies" with me?

I make pretty good monies but that's prolly one of the reasons I'm getting divorced lol.

She was understandably pissed and so was I when I came to my senses.

I normally don't enjoy gambling much.

I wish I could grow poppies though. Man my house would be a hot little opium sex den.

Also don't get fucked up and Gamble to avoid a facepalm eh?

This is a great post Pasty. I have been out of the game for some time so I'm pretty much relearning a lot with all the new techniques and advice.

I came in here with an attitude and didn't learn a damn thing. I came across this thread and left my ego at the door and opened my eyes and ears. Don't think I ever got to thank you for it, so cheers man.

Great post, but I don't agree that you can't do any valid experiments with MS.  After all, people are pretty MS as well.  With the right statistical tools you can prove a point in an MS grow very well.  Without them, you can't prove shit in a perfectly controlled grow from an isolate.

valid experiments is a subjective term. Valid to who and at what level of "Science" that is the question.

Valid to anyone who believes statistics are critical to science, I think.  And as to what level of science, I think p=0.05 is good enough for this.

You are right and I know what you are getting at. So tell will a single ms grow constitute an experiment? Because that's what most people's ms "experiments" here consist of.

I will also say that depending on the variables and hypothesis, ms might actually be a requirement. But you would usually need a large sample size.

  Yeah, I know what you mean.  I guess my answer is a qualified yes: if it's properly controlled and a statistical test like the t-test or chi-squared is used, then sure, a single grow could be enough.  Most people won't do that because they don't know how--but then again, very few people on here do experiments of any kind.  I guess I should probably do a write-up on that.

Agreed regarding MS increasing sample size.  You're going to pick up a lot of noise with that amount of variability, which is why human studies have to be so large most of the time.  Except in psychology, which in my opinion isn't an actual science.

I would probably agree with pinning this but it would be read even less than the forum rules.

Shame really, if newbs read both this and the rules before they posted, 80% of them would be 100% less butthurt and cronicr would be 95% less busy.

This is rule one for good reason.

Exactly! :whathesaid:

Read, use the search engine, follow Teks to a T, ask questions, and learn hands on as well as in research. This community is amazing and quite possibly could be dramatically effecting the acceleration of the science in this field. These are exciting times to be a mycologist and this place is on the front lines.

I would really recommend How Frank Gets His Shit Done , PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek , and creating a trade list and engaging in the community- check out The Free Wedge Forum

I look forward to seeing your future grows!

Hear..Hear. That's what makes a good mod, imo. Not handing out points for posting to a 5 year old thread. There is soo much on here that's over a decade old, is easy for a noob to get totally screwed up trying to do the correct things. Keep up the great work

Thanks Pasty. As a genuine noob here but no so much at life in general it is extremely refreshing to read this 'over a year old' post that obviously comes from an adult and is delivered in a no-punches-pulled manner and can yet still be eloquently said. Most of your post could be copied and pasted with minor changes and used in as many different aspects of life as there are spores up under a cap. I've been reading here just long enough to begin to form (or create) opinions of the personalities behind the usernames. This post is at least a +2 to your personality profile. Congrats and thanks all the same.
