How I conquered my fear of public speaking * 2
    #22859794 - 02/03/16 02:28 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

I used to get so nervous about speeches, afraid that I would faint or have a panic attack that my voice sounded different and I didn't even like to get called on by my professors. I was told it would get easier with practice but it never did. I tried drinking some kava kava once to relax but forgot my speech on it.
I started doing workouts before my speeches to burn off the nervous energy and it worked. In addition to feeling more relaxed, I felt positive about my physique standing in front of a lot of people. But having this weapon against my fear emboldened me even when I'd not worked out. I no longer was mute during class but started participating and no longer ducked away from being called on. I got cocky toward the end and tried to give a speech without doing my workout but I felt nervous again.:leaving:

I love your suggestion, rather than taking anything external to help(of which maybe the only thing i can think of that would help without hindering would be beta blockers, i have had them before and any of that cortisol fight or flight seems to fade away but keeps you clear headed, but they are a pain to find available).  The body has amazing abilities to heal and contol hormones, exercise is paramount to contolling your own body.  I will remember your advice next time i need to speak in front of a crowd.

That's an interesting observation.  I've never tried working out before a speech, but I do know that after a workout my head feels more clear, so it makes perfect sense.  I used to be afraid of public speaking until I got a job where I was publicly speaking several times per month in front of all types and sizes of audiences.  I found that over time I was able to take the nervous energy and consolidate it into my chest as opposed to my extremities.  It used to be that being nervous made my hands and fingers shake and I got clumsy and my voice became monotone (at least from my perspective).  But when I learned how to focus all the nervousness into my chest I actually became better at speaking.  When you think about it, nervousness is just adrenaline, which is nature's steroid, so if you are able to harness and control it you can perform better.  Suddenly I found myself preparing less and less for speeches and improvising more, and I actually looked forward to that feeling in my chest.  It was kind of like a natural high (which is, I guess, what adrenaline is).

I don't like speaking in front of people either and I hate the sound of my voice recorded as well. I used to work in a call center where we periodically had meetings with our supervisors where we had to listen to our calls as our supes graded the quality. I remember when I first heard a co-worker say that she too hated the sound of her own voice. I felt more normal!

Very interesting story! I suppose that this is a very healthy way of dealing with your anxiety. I deal in a similar way with my anxiety of failing in school. Instead of staying in that moment I decide to just start studying. And not for long I forget my anxiety when I rediscover the pleasure of studying the thing I love the most. This has gotten me really far.

That's a very good idea. Next time I will be lifting some dumbells while talking to minimize my nervousness even more haha

I have had a similar experience with anxiety and exercise.  I knew that raising my heartbeat lowered my anxiety for a few hours but i didn't know why. A few years back read a report claiming that exercise helps to lower anxiety and their reasoning was sound. It went a little like this:

In the wild, humans developed anxiety(cortisol) as a means to get the body to avoid potentially dangerous things, like big cats or bears. This anxiety would keep people diligent about avoiding these dangers by making one feel uneasy or prompting intrusive thoughts. If one was confronted with danger they would run, raising their heartbeat and flushing out the cortisol that causes anxiety. This was twofold effective because it taught the brain to avoid danger and then solidified the interaction by rewarding the brain with calm. Well, in the modern world our stresses cant be ran from. Nobody tries to literally run from homework, bills, relationship issues etc. They may try to avoid them but not physically run. Because bills don't have sharp teeth we, as a culture, have forgotten about how important running from a problem can be. For this reason it is not unreasonable to claim that, in modern times, many people live every day of their lives in an unnatural amount of stress. So, next time you think yourself into some anxiety(aka trying to accumulate cortisol) try to step away from the situation and jog to flush all of that cortisol away. However, it wont fix real world problems, flushing cortisol wont release

I adopted this method a while back and it changed my life. Every time i fear i step away and jog while focusing on my breathing. Currently, i jog during every break in class.

I like your explanation. It makes sense in a way that we are programmed to behave like that. I will keep this in mind in the future!

Whenever I did my public speaking in high school i would alsays try to keep my mind on the buisness at hand. I would try to block out what I thought anyone in the crowd was thinking, and I would develops tunnel vision. I wouldn't focous on their faces. I stocked to the material at hand I was speaking about. I got really nervous beforehand but I was able to face my fear.

I had a friend who had nothing but praise for Toastmasters.  Depends how seriously you take public speaking but worth a look if you want to improve your speaking.

The first time I stood in front of a lecture theatre of 300 students that fear just went - soon I was enjoying myself enormously.  Before the year´s course was over I fucked a couple of the girls as well.

I think because so many people find it intimidating that there is an opportunity there to shine if you handle it with total composure.

Comedians like Jim Carrey really knew how to do the public speaking.

For me it was mix of preparing for my speach, as well as gradual realisation that:
a) noone knows what I'm about to say or know the script, so it's rather unpropable they will notice if I make mistake
b) if I truly preped then there is high chance I know material better than anybody from the public. After all - how offten do You correct Your prof if s/he is presenting completly new material
