Papaver Somniferum questions
    #22852723 - 02/01/16 10:36 PM (8 years, 22 days ago)

Hey all! A member from the market place was kind enough to trade me some poppy seeds for a print. I've decided to plant some Papaver somniferum in my garden this year as sort of a hobby gardening project. I'd also like to get some good old school poppy alkaloids for personal use. I'm not looking for a shit ton here or even enough to substain anykind of "Habit". Just a little bit for a few test runs of laudnum. :homerpods: I live in Northern Georgia and just had a few questions for some of you guys to help make my garden as full and beautiful as possible.

First question is what type of soil should I use to plant them? My backyard mostly pretty dense red clay so I know i'm gonna have to till up a little area and add my own/condition it. I've read "sandy loam" type soil but i've searched alot and haven't been able to find anyone go into detail as far as mixes/pre-made products. Would something like miracle gro work? I'd prefer not to use that as i've read some pretty shitty things about it.

Another one i've seen is "Black gold" potting soil at walmart like here  It's suppose to be a sandy loam type soil and it's currently on roll back for 5$ per BIG bag outside at my walmart. I'd like to use that kind and was wondering if there's anything I should add to make it better? Sand maybe for faster draining or Peatmoss, Worm Castings,Blood meal, Garden compost, from homedepot?  I've read to use super diluted miracle grow fertilizer once the plants get established so i'll probably do that. If anyone would care to chime in on what's worked best for you that'd be great

I'm also wondering when is the best time to start them? This winter has been unseasonably warm. Right now we got highs of 62F and lows 37F but this was a little warm snap and it's suppose to go back to the standard feburary 47F/29F next week.  Would a temperature like that kill my seeds once they've germinated? I'd like to get them in the ground ASAP.

Last question I have is which variety is the strongest/which plants to grow with them to make it look less suspicous. I've seen the giganteums all over the internet so they look to be the best as far as yeild/total alkaloid content. I'd also like to grow some that are super potent with less yeild for extracts and such. I was thinking the persian white variety as they are said to be the most potent gram for gram. Anyone got any opinions on the best kind to grow?

I was thinking of doing some oriental poppies with them, the reason being is that most people in my area see poppies and assume they are just the "decorative" or inactive ornamental types. (A house next to my grandmothers grows poppies every year and when I asked her about it she said they were just the breadseed kind. Lol) I also would like to grow peppers, tomatoes, various herbs and such. But I was thinking about something to start earlier to grow alongside the poppies so they're not lonely/drawing all of the attention.

Sorry for this wall of text, this is my first time growing these and I just need a little help working out the details. I'm not asking to be spoonfed i've already spent alot of time researching but I have a life and have to go to work and such and I haven't found a straight forward answer to any of my questions online. Special thanks to anyone kind enough to help.

I read that poppies are very undemanding outdoors so a regular garden soil should be fine. Due to the fact that they need some cold to germinate best, it's right now the time to sow them (correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I already read a few times in the shroomery).
The Giganteum is the one with the biggest pods so that's probably not the best choice if it should be unsuspicious.
The most famous poppy is definitely the Tasmanian variety. It builds out multiple pods and has a high alkaloid content.
