Didier Delsalle (born May 6, 1957, in Aix-en-Provence, France) is a fighter pilot and helicopter test pilot. On May 14, 2005, he became the first (and only) person to land a helicopter, the Eurocopter AS350 Squirrel, on the 8,848 m (29,030 ft) summit of Mount Everest.

Most helicopters cant fly nearly that high. and the highest up the mountain the less places to land as there is nothing flat to land on. It's ridiculously expensive and dangerous to use helicopters for rescue especially the further up.

Yeah it's not impossible, but choppers are not designed to go that high and it's incredibly, incredibly dangerous.

Whenever there's a climbing rescue in the high Himalayas it's extrememly difficult finding a pilot who is A) willing to attempt it, and B) when they do find one, they almost always only go up to a certain point where they deem it still safe, drop off the rescue team, and then helicopter back down. In the Himalayas a rescue is rarely as simple as fly a chopper to the distressed climber, pick them up, and go back down.

Nah, chances are you wouldnt be able to make it to the top because there would be 100 other people in line waiting to take a picture. Id rather backpack a remote trail in the rocky mountain wilderness for less than $200.

Wilderness recoveries are extremely difficult even 20 miles out of Seattle in the Cascades, and those are relatively tame mountains in comparison

2 more died on Everest yesterday. That brings the total of deaths to 4 now for the climbing season. And the season just began.

Look at the line to the summit in the link (photo taken Wednesday)...Everest has become an uber expensive, uber dangerous Disneyland ride now.

Here's the photos from this week on Everest

That is...out of control.

K2, which would be a waaayyyyy more impressive feat, and in comparison probably has a couple dozen human beings on it right now as opposed to hundreds and hundreds. Problem with K2 is there's an extreme few alive that are qualified enough to even consider attempting it.

For the vast majority of climbers on Everest -- many of whom are wealthy weekend warriors and not veteran climbers -- trying K2 would be a death sentence.

But it really is amazing, though. Everest has become a business. A corporation.

If somebody offered to cover your expenses for the entire trek -- and all you had to do was show up at the airport tomorrow, would you do it?

I definitely would not. LOTS of people have died attempting to climb Mount Everest. Some were great climbers, but some died because they were very inexperienced but naively felt like doing it would be a huge accomplishment that they could brag about

It's one thing to have an adventurous spirit, its another to not show respect for the power of nature

I've never climbed a mountain in my life, much less that monster. I would MAYBE agree to it if I was allowed at least a year or two to prepare

Nah. Pass. I've scaled a lot of mountains up in Alaska. It's a lot of work. Maybe if I didn't have to walk back down.

3 more died yesterday on Everest.

That's what, 5 in roughly 48 hrs? This is rapidly starting to resemble Everest disasters from years past.

I've actually had thoughts about climbing my Everest. I know people die on that mountain and I feel like it be a great feat and accomplishment to achieve. I'd seriously consider doing it. I am decently in shape and have not a lot of climbing experience,  but I think I have endurance and will power.
