if your using half pint jars then just boil them in a BIG pot of water, keeping them off the bottom so they dont get burnt. Cook them for an hour and a half.

what theboss said is proabably best to do, just put a rag down on the bottom of the pot for the jarts to sit on. There is also fractional sterilization teks using the microwave although i dont know anyone that has ever tried one but they are in the FAQ's. If you are serious about this u are going to want to go ahead and get a pressure cooker though. If you ever plan to advance to growing with grains then a pressure cooker is going to be required.

No,that will not work. You either need a PC or you need to boil the Jars like The Boss said.If there was an easier way,it would be posted and everyone would do it.there is not.Your best bet is to boil the jars anything other than that will result in a very very high rate of failure,if you even get any growth.Read up on it some, then ask questions, the info is all rifght there, just read. Here is the link:
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23264
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3171

Now with that said,i tried an experiment a while ago with Dishwasher steralization a while back.I did four jars,in the end 2 jars got contaminated, while 2 jars grew well, and are pinning right now.
So so far its a 50% failure rate. This test alone doesnt prove much but next time i am doing 10.5 dishwasher,5 boiling, then ill have a little more of a test group.Anyway heres the link to that thread, like i said,im still recomending the boiling, just letting you know that once you have that way down, you can experiment a little.Good Luck!:

Get a pressure cooker or maybe order some plastic jar lids from mycosupply. Oh, Micron Magick has those new myco starter lids (plastic) with the self sealing injector sites that seem pretty cool. These things seem like they could be the answer to a lot of peoples contamination problems.

Both microwaving and boiling won't get hot enough to kill all of the baddies, though it will get most of them.

The reason for this is because once the water has boiled and turned into steam in either a pot or in the microwave its hard to get it hotter - so there you are, stuck at 212 farenheit. If you want to get hotter you use a PC - this is because when you add pressure into the equation water has to get hotter to boil - so hotter it will get!

I know PCs cost a lot of $ (though you can get $40 ones at WalMart/Target that will do the job quite nicely - hell, that's what I use!) - but they are very, very worth it. You use the PC all the time when doing this sort of growing. Save up and get one! Until you do just expect a relatively high contam rate...

setup,
6 jars of 50-50 verm and brown rice pressure cooked for 45mins
2B+ 2EQ 2GT.
5 jars of 50-50 verm and brown rice flour boiled
2B+ 1EQ 1GT.
in this handy dandy terrarium with a clear top, verm "soil" soaked with water and humidified nicely. All I need is a thermometer to check the temps, my guess is a good 80-84F.

Any other things i could do? I'll post pics if someone tells me how.
