sky rocket (mocha flavor) ingredients: cane sugar water natural & artificial flavors caffeine citric acid sodium benzoate potassium sorbate (less than 1% to ensure freshness)
Might the sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate harm or kill mycelium? It's worth a try though.

"Sodium benzoate can prevent growth of almost all microorganisms (yeast, bacteria, and fungi). It operates best in an acidic environment, and it works synergically with other food-grade preservatives -- most notably potassium sorbate." Sodium Benzoate

Is there a link to this information? It would be interesting to know what other substances were tested. I would be particularly interested in what substances hindered growth. I am curious as to know why this was never noticed by more experienced cultivators, especially commercial operations that may have experimented with the use of spent coffee grounds. This has to have been done, and I imagine some caffiene is still left over in the spent grounds. I would think that if this were true, it would be a guarded secret in the commercial world.
Even Stamets mentions the use of coffe grounds, but nothing of accelerated growth/pinning rates. Is it possible that this may only work for certain species? Is it possible that the concentration needed is very specific? I would think this to be true, each species usually has a semi-specific substrate range that it will grow on (some requiring very specific diets), but each has a fairly specific subtrate that it does best on. This is the kind of thing that needs to be tested if we are to improve the process, but the list of things to try is enormous. Additives and chemicals are an even further dive into complexity. The Brassinosteroids that were mentioned awhile back was very promising, but the price was great. The caffiene or coffee brew idea has sparked my interest (as most new trends do, experimenting is all part of the fun) and I plan to try it myself.
Interesting indeed. A five fold increase? Really...

My research shows mycelial growth is somewhat faster, but not double, let alone five times. Pinning times are reduced, and pinsets are much better than without coffee. Also, coffee makes it possible, as you can see from pictures early in this thread, to use straight rye or popcorn, and get decent invitro production.

Just had to throw out all my seven jars of coffee rye, due to bacteria contamination, I was wondering why they were so sluggish. I injected with an old partly used syringe. Bollocks!

The last set of jars that I did had 10% coffee in the water. They did real good. I plan to do this again with 50/50, h20/coffee.

Im thinking of doing a few jars with just rye like Roger did and seeing what happens for myself. I read the whole thread, he mentions he had to sterilize the coffee. Would that be accomplished by boiling it or microwaving it? Then just mix 50/50 with water, dunk the rye, let it drain and PC it? Sounds like a plan to me. When I do this Ill make sure to post results and pictures

mine are in limbo, 21 qts of pcorn fully colonized, coffee-hydrated with grounds in the jars, no contams at about 24 days along. so far they appear perfectly normal. i'll be casing very soon and will update further then.

Just remember, use diluted coffee. The only bad results I've had, or others have had is when they used it full strength, or used dilute coffee and the spent grinds. Use either the coffee (diluted) or the spent grinds from your coffee pot, but not both. Too much coffee actually will slow down growth/pinning.
