There is no profit in destroying the resource you are using. The feds are incompetent. All they care about is tax revenue

Dude, I work for the feds and I'm here to tell you, you are sooooo wrong. Maybe in washington that's all they care about, but not the people on the ground.
I'll quote you a rancher we work with, who btw hates the BLM with a passion, but he's smart as fuck and actually has been successful in court against the BLM. He addressed congress and than came back and told this to another rancher, "don't tell this to the BLM, but we need them. the people on the ground here understand nature and the land and have their hearts in the right place. the people in washington dont know shit and dont care about anything."
he didn't say this to me, he said this to a big horn sheep hunter who told it to me. But yea, man don't get washington mixed up with teh BLM

Yeah there is. It's called getting what you can while you can get it. Selfish people don't think about the future, they just want to exploit what they can as quickly as possible. It's human nature. If you don't have an authority reigning In that kind of behavior selfish people just try to get as much as they can before the other selfish people get it first.

People don't think about the future unless they are forced by politicians who think exactly two, four or six years ahead? Or by bureaucrats who look to their next paycheck and paygrade increase? Right. Those are much better stewards than the people who actually rely on a resource for a living.

You know who relies on a resource for their livings? Fishermen. How has that worked Out? They will fish until there are no fish left. Farmers in the west are bitching that they don't get enough water. Why don't they get enough water? Because they've used up all the water. What happens when the resources are exploited and destroyed? They beg for handouts because their fisheries have failed. Because their crops failed. Because they built their house and planted their crops in a flood zone and it got washed away.

yea its insane, farmers pump water to the surface and than wonder why the aquifer level goes down and their wells dry up. Shit most places the aquifer is over 100 feet below the surface. Some grasses will have a tap root taht is hundreds of feet deep. Sage brush will have tap roots thousands of feet deep. That's a fragile environment.

Farmers in California don't have enough water because 1 they never should have had it in the first place and 2 the water is diverted to preserve the habitat of some shitty little shad or something. So don't give them handouts. I find federal flood insurance to be a huge mistake. Pay market price for flood insurance or move. The farmers didn't use up all the water. Beverly Hills did. The fisheries haven't failed. Do you know how many cod fisherman there will be when there isn't enough catch to justify the expense in gas? None. Then the cod will recover. Do you know what is doing great? Lobster.

Agriculture accounts for 80+% of the water in California. Residential use is only 5%.

On the total water use numbers themselves, there is broad agreement. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, about 9 million acres of farmland in the state are irrigated, representing about 80 percent of all water used by people.
But that figure excludes roughly 50 percent of all water in California dedicated for environmental purposes, and farmers complain some water in the ecologically sensitive Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is off-limits to them.
Nice try. The farmers get 80% 0f half. That works out to 40% in my math book.

What was the closest town to you? like 5 miles away, another town of a couple hundred. The closest town to me is 30 miles away and its only a couple hundred. I'm in a town of a couple hundred. than the next closest is 50 miles away. The way of life out here is completely different. And 100% of the land in the east was tilled by those crazy europeans in the 1600 and 1700s so there is precious little natural land back there. Easterners just can't really relate unless they lived her. Just like NYC would probably be super foriegn to me now. But yea, I mean the people in washington just care about horses and keeping the ranchers from rebelling. Oh and getting elected. All of the day to day and week to week is set by us.

Clayton was 15 miles away and was about twice the size. Watertown was 25 miles away and significantly bigger but still a joke. My point is that not all of the East is cities. It is also true that the BLM takes its marching orders from politicians in DC.

So since by using that water to maintain environmentally important areas close to farming areas farmers benefit from those environmental centers, such as runoff and erosion control, maintaining a shallow water table, pollution control, etc. So that 50% can also be given to the farmers. Since it benefits them more than residential people.
