strange brown star (not earthstar) identification help.

Hi, first time post!
While making a nature guide of family owned land, my daughter and I came across what appears to be a mushroom not in any guidebooks or easily accessed website.
I am a complete novice at this, but the closest I came to finding it was "Astreus Hygrometricus" Earth Star.  However, there was no ball in the center in any of the specimens (around 5) that we saw; all were almost identical to the one I took a picture of in both size and shape (pic includes ruler for scale).
It was laying flat on the ground, and is leathery in texture. Details are below, but some I just don't know the answer too (e.g. "gills")

Is it possible that it IS an earthstar, just missing the ball, given the commonality in texture and size?
anyways :

Habitat:
North Carolina Piedmont region, in grass pasture near woods, growing on soil
which is clayish in nature. ground is covered with leaf (mostly red and white oak with an occasional gumball thrown in for good measure).

Gills:
grey brown and bruised brownish black, almost a deep purple hue if looked at in the right (wrong?) light.

Stem:
didn't see one, as I didn't know that would help.

Cap:
star shaped, leathery texture, thickness of cowhide.

Spore print color:
no idea, as I left it laying there.

Bruising:
Same as above.
