Pholiota adiposa/aurivella edibility; etc?
    #22825675 - 01/26/16 02:19 AM (8 years, 23 days ago)

Not sure where to put this, if it's the wrong section could the mods move it?

Came across a recent paper which suggested adiposa has known to be edible and which includes possible medical use:
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=10&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwikzsvxjsfKAhWDnYMKHcmOCKEQFghKMAk&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mdpi.com%2F1420-3049%2F18%2F2%2F1775%2Fpdf&usg=AFQjCNEk3lYHf7ax-bkmvFdBD4s1UzR7Wg&sig2=2zt7y6q2m0oTJOCZBzArnw

Of course, other sources say it is poisonous and should be avoided. Mushroom expert says it is common for adiposa & aurivella to get confused in many catalogs:

"aurivella":

I think some other source said aurivella is edible.
Basically, does anyone know if adiposa is edible, or if the mushroom in the paper is actually adiposa? Would be interesting to know and to ascertain that aurivella is a different species than adiposa.

Ah yes, that book.

So one of those mushrooms that is poisonous to some but in others has no ill effects? And then apparently, they are pretty identical except microscopic differences in the spores. Supposedly contains adenosine...

Sounds risky to eat, but you wouldn't die if you got the wrong one.  I wouldn't eat something just based off of spore size in a group as untested as Pholiota.

I have heard that most Pholiotas are edible though.

Well I was looking for an orange mushroom with red warts and then from there was surprised to see it might be considered edible. I'm still not sure... I guess the worst that can happen is vomiting/diarrhea? With either species. I guess in this case spore size could just determine which mushroom it is since otherwise they both kind of look identical.
Good to know most Pholiotas can be safe though..
