I'm going a 50/50 coir and compost manure Now I understand all of what to do expect one thing. The coir is in a brick. How do a measure out 50/50 weight or Volume?? If it's volume then do I just grid down the brick? Please help

you can break off the coir in layers, or you can add a gallon of water let it expand and then do you're measuring..

Pasteurize the prepared coir, mixed with manure, with all of it at field capacity. If you don't want to use the whole brick you can flake pieces off the side with a short knife, do it by weight.

I just use a sawzall to cut the brick of coir....Then to measure I hydrate it a little to break it up and just load into quart jars and judge it by that and pasteurize. If you have a little extra so what, it is cheap shit (at least where Im from)......Coir and manure work great by themselves so that proportion shouldn't matter much.... You don't have to be anal about these proportions for a bulk project unless you are adding other additives.....
PS Coir is tough shit

well it is a 1/1 ratio 1 part coir to an equal part of manure you could use an online converter to convert volume to mass. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12549702 they say here a brick is estimated @ 8-9 quarts hope this helps.

Again, flake it off with a sturdy knife. NBD.

LMAO....I tried cutting it in half with a sharp knife....Then I beat it with a hammer...Then said screw this, I have a truck full of tools, lets break out the sawzall....

I know its probably an old post sorry. im trying to up my posts to 50 in a useful way. and yeah I have to be "that guy" haha RR doesn't use this method for "bulk" he says at the start its for pasteurizing SMALL amounts of sub. :p He also adds a 240ml cup of hydrated lime to I think every 10 gallons of water, He says this helps with pasteurization too And with coir sometimes you can get bricks that have like cuts half way through them to break into smaller pieces- I let it soak in a bucket of warm water till fully absorbed, then just use my hands to strain it to field capacity, Then measure by volume, your measures don't have to be exactly anything just as long as they are all the same(use the same sized cup and write down how many parts- your cup now equals one part regardless of its size. Works well for me. Maybe the best way to go- I know coir is quite clean compared to say, Straw. but if there was endospores in there soaking it for a day before pasteurizing would help germinate the nasties :$

Also no need to soak bulk for endospores

This thread has been closed.
Reason:
for the smal hobbyists doing a tub at a time jars are great, for thd guy doing edibles on large scale it isn't practicle.
