Is Regulation Better?
    #22822975 - 01/25/16 02:30 PM (8 years, 4 days ago)

I was just reading through an overview on California's Adult Use of Marijuana Act and was curious: if states were to institute something similar for psilocybin, would it actually be a good thing? I know a lot of people are dreading regulation in California for weed but obviously mushrooms are a whole other bag (pun only sort of intended). Personally, I'm for regulation just so that pesticides are regulated.

Imo, the regulation of any substance is better than no regulation at all..

Although one side of my brain is telling me regulation is just a way of gov's making money, enforcing control etc.. But after witnessing so many people OD and get seriously hurt from incorrectly ID'ed chemicals, and natural products, im all for regulations.

Plus on a side note, regulated products are trusted. It allows them to become a common element in society without so much stigma attached. It also creates an environment where people can do more efficient R & D into something without being hindered by government policies.

regulation of all recreational drugs would provide several benefits.

- age restrictions
- purity controls
- price controls
- decriminalization of drug-taking and drug possession (and everything that follows from it i.e. drastically reduced stress on the legal system)
- a safer state for addicts (i.e. removing the stigma of being an addict would make resources that address addiction more accessible as well reduce deaths from overdose)
- drugs would cease to be a cash crop for terrorist organizations

the only downside i see is that social conservatives would have to face the fact that getting high is not implicitly immoral behavior. i'm not sure how easy that battle would be to win considering the decades of rhetoric we've had telling us that drugs and everyone who uses them are evil.
