Yeah, I figured there was probably an appropriate subforum. Just can't wait to trip, gah! Anyway, I'll try that. Cheers!

Very low tek producers just use steel drums, that can even be stacked up to steam pasteurize stuff.

Some day I'll roll like thoooose peepz.

I signed up some time ago and have been a little tardy about stopping to say hi :-) Just stopped in for a bit of inspiration and some reassurance.
Sure we all get a little impatient. And I will explain why I am thus now.

I started with some syringes about 2 months ago. Decided to do the bulk substrate right off. Prepared a fridge and had to move the enormous thing in thru the window :-) I filled it with 24 x 1 quart jars. Had success with about 100% of them. But when trying to bust up the jars by knocking against a roll of duct tape, which I over did I suspect, I think I damaged the mycelium.  I took what was looking healthy and went to the next step.

What happened while I was filling garbage bags with the 1 to 4 ratio (Inoculated Rye to Vermiculite) was inevitable.  I had to tease the large chunks out of the jars inside the glove box, then massaged the contents to get a nice blending. As a first timer, you have no idea as to how this is all done, even if you have just caused massive incursion of contamination. Well I put my faith to work for me and installed three well prepared bins.

To this point I had zero contams. I was very happy about that.
It was one month ago the bins, each with two garbage bags, about 3" deep, went into the 86*F side of my fruiting chamber. The other side is 76*F for obvious reasons.

I have looked in on the interior of the bags once two weeks ago. No contams still!!:smile: but not solid white like a good PFTek jar looks. I am patient, they were clearly not ready for prime time.

So it is time to get an opinion, and where better than this thread to share the current state of affairs for this my first flush attempt.

I suppose it all boils down to how much vermiculite should be allowed to go into the final stage here in an uncolonized state.

Another thing, in my previous post the photograph is borrowed. What I have is more like half solid white rhizomorphic activity, and the rest is what looks like verm with tufts of substrate showing through pretty much what you see in the image. Apparently this gentleman was already running lights, 76* and a bubbler. So it isn't that much of a stretch to assume he is fruiting.
It is a long drawn out process to sterilize myself, the camera,..shoot, download from camera and upload to Photobucket so I can then make new and fascinating updated URL images:tongue:.

For that I apologize. I will be posting before the day is up

I inoculated 15 jars with cubes spores at different intervals, and 5 of them are nearing 95% colonization (using PC brf tek provided here).

I have only one shotgun fruiting chamber which already contains 11 brf cakes, and appears to be near its capacity for producing the most mushrooms from each cake.

Recently I had some success taking a less promising cake which fell apart a little in the birthing process, and mixing it with pasteurized substrate (2 parts coco coir, 1 part de-amoniated horse manure, and 1 part vermiculite). I placed the resulting mixture In a thin, clear, plastic quart container with four holes on the sides, just above the substrate, as well as a hole in the middle of the lid and another in the middle of the base.  The resulting mixture filled about 2 inches of the container and had about three inches of air separating the substrate mixture from the lid.  This container produced about 12 grams dried cubes over 4-5 weeks, and I was wondering if I could do the same on a larger scale.

That is, if I made a proper monotub (55-115 L, two holes on either long side at substrate level, one hole at each end near the top, one hole in the lid, and three holes in the base), using the same ratio of substrate materials, then could I mix in my older, or less intensely/frequently fruiting brf cakes to save space in my sgfc?

Or would it be more practical to just make another 55+ L sgfc for my overflow brf cakes?

Or you could just go mono since that appears to be where you are going anyway. Once you see the yields from mono you will probably give up on the cakes.

Get the grains properly hydrated. Not too wet and not too dry.

Good filter for grain spawns.

Calibrated thermometer for pasteurization.

Just built two of these last night. The sterilite 1896
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10713572/fpart/40/vc/1#10713572

My mycelium seems to be weak for some reason. Fully colonized I am assuming because I gave it a week after I mixed the bag for the last time, the outside was all white with a couple grains of bird seed/Rye untouched. So I waited 3 more days and every nugget and seed in my bag had white attached to it but I didnt get golf ball sized clumps when I opened it, I got single grains with what I assume is mycelium on them, a couple marble sized chunks and maybe one ping pong ball sized chunk.

I broke it all down and mixed it into a half brick of pasteurized coir with some gypsum and verm. I have been following a few different teks. I am so new to this so I really dont know if what I am doing is right. I really broke it down. Is it going to come back or did I damage it by breaking it down to chunks the size of 1/4 inch?

I lost 3 bags my first week to contam. White that went green, that eventually engulfed the entire bags in just a day or two. I tossed them out immediately. I innoc'd 3 more bags in their place and they seem to be doing ok but still what seems like weak mycelium.

I have been letting them (bags) get maybe 20% then I push the myc to the middle of the bag to try to help it take over the whole bag. Seems to make the chunks all tiny and weak. I am just not sure where I am making the mistakes.

Like I said I just trasferred one bag to a mini mono last night. I followed directions in Doc_t thread.

This morning I was massaging a bag and found green inside. Tossed it. Looked at my other bags, they are doing the same non clumpy growth. Like they aren't making any links between eachother. Only one golf ball sized clump.

Any advice? I used bags from a sponsor, I innoc in a SAB, I PC for 90 minutes plus. I think if it was contam it would have gone green by now, the others went green quick. These are just slowly getting whiter and thicker. Maybe I am just impatient?

You have serious issues right there.

Why not go small first before doing bags.

Anyway, you should sterilize for 2hrs since bags need more time for heat to get inside.

And what did you inoculate the bags with? Spores?

With that contam rate, you should go do pf tek and maybe small grain spawns before jumping to bags man.

Start over and pin down your contamination vector. You need to know where your contaminants are coming from so you can address it properly.

Then my primary concern is a pressure cooker: the link below is for a large pressure cooker which can be set to 5, 10, or 15 psi and can hold 5 quart-sized jars, but I don't think it comes with a temperature gauge.  Is this acceptable?  Or is this too risky to use for sanitation?

Just want to share a bit of my experience when it comes to this wonderful art and this wonderful site. The PC they recommend is great, but it is useless for anything else and it takes up A LOT of space. Go small until you are sure you want to go large.

Peace

Not sure why you think the 22 qt is large or why it is useless for anything else. My 23 qt seems a perfect size to me.

There is no real need for a pressure guage on a PC. The weight is calibrated accordingly and all the pressure guage does is confirm that info to you. That is assuming it is reading accurately as those small guages are notorious for their inaccuracy. In other words the guage is pretty much useless anyway.

You really aren't telling enough about your materials and procedures for anyone to provide much detailed advice. You seem to have 2 problems which may or may not be related, your 'weak' myc and your contams. I'd try to solve the contams problem first as if you can't get beyond the contams it won't matter much how strongly your myc is progressing.
First I'd suggest reading the following bag tek;
https://www.shroomery.org/8398/Preparing-spawn-bags
Note that it recommends 3 to 4 hours PC'g for multiple bags with as little as 2 hours if one single bag. This does seem a bit long and per this tek the recommended time on a WBS mix is only 2 hours;
https://www.shroomery.org/9665/Cybers-WBS-myco-bag-Tek
Getting your seeds properly hydrated is also tricky and proper inoculation procedures. Here is a whole list of teks that would help;
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17897163#17897163
Finally as Pablo asked, how did you inoculate, with what? That last list of teks will also help with this. Another consideration is the use of agar plates to ensure whatever you are using is contam free and that you are choosing the best of your myc for inoculation. Again here is a pretty complete list of reads covering the use of agar;
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22721954/vc/1#22721954
If you get your contam problem fixed you may find your myc no longer appears "weak". Good luck with it.

Because it's gigantic (look up the dimensions -  15.4 x 15.1 x 14.8 inches. ) and unless you plan on doing a lot of jam, it is useless for anything else. That is all. Really. I mean, REALLY.
