Sterilizing stuff is a hassle, that's one reason. :wink: Another reason is that the material you are working with may not need to be sterilized. As I learned from Lizard King's posts, maybe jiffy style mix doesn't need to be sterilized. No harm in doing one cake or two this way to find out.

If you need to sterilize stuff you could try the microwave or the oven. You could also try putting it in a bowl inside a large pot with water in it. Cover and make sure the casing mix is damp. Do this for an hour or so. I think this method is listed in 9er's pages in the grow section.

We ALWAYS sterilise our casing soil for one full hour in a pressure cooker.
Pressue cooking is much better than baking in an oven or nuking it in a microwave as it keeps the moisture and because it really kills everything inside.
We have had quite some bad experiences with unsterilised casing (mostly molds showing up on the casing).
I recommend pressure cooking your casing soil. You can use jars, but we use oven bags.

i would pasteurize not sterilize unless you are growing pans i have no problems with pasteurized casing 2 hours in a water bath at 60 to 80 C
