pleurotus djamor (pink oysters) completed
    #2281330 - 01/28/04 05:30 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

i put a wedge of gifted agar (thanks, Mr Pink!) into a jar of sterilised wild birdseed. when that was 100% white, i pasteurised some straw and let it cool. then i mixed the two together and stuffed it into a plastic bag. this bag was left in a tub covered by a black plastic rubbish bag for two weeks.

first i hung it up in the kitchen, when i first noticed the bag had started to pin in the tub. i just liked looking at it.

look !

then i decided that the house is too dry (snowing outside so i can't hang em out there, house centrally heated throughout to about 75) so i hung it in a tub. trouble is, i'll now have to fan lots (and it's not very securely held in the lid edge) to make them mature properly.

the tub is a simple clear plastic storage tub, with wet perlite in it. when i've done oysters before, they only really opened up after i hung them outside.

recommendations?

hi shirley,

have the same problem growing my pleurotus pulmonaris indoors. I have found out that covering the mushrooms with a clear plastic still leaving some air coming in from the floor works quite well. So CO2 which is heavier than O2 can escape at the bottom.
I mist them several times a day in order to keep humidity high.
Also had to put them in front of a window because they really do need a lot of light - at least for mushrooms . When the caps get enough light they grow much bigger then the ones in the dark.
You can see some pictures of the first flush here.

By the way: Would'nt you trade your p. dmajor against some another strain ? I have a lot of different edibles. I would really like to try the p.dmajor out cause I like their color very much.

awesome work shirley knott... boys and girls, the story is that I had an extra culture and rather then to throw it away I wanted to send it to someone who I thought would make good use of it. I definately made the right choice... I look forward to seeing the mature fruits in the future.

I guess lid off - they might need some air exchange so that the caps develop properly ...

Good work Shirl!
They need quite a lot of air-exchange to develop nice caps.
Mine always had a quite unpleasant smell so I wonder if that's always the case or I just had some sort of weird strain or contamination.

I guess I have the same strain as you ( how come ? ), but mine smell like a mixture between coffee and the soil in the woods.

The grain spawn and colonized straw smell normally, but mature mushrooms... I don't know how to describe it... rather unpleasant.

update:

i have the worst possible growing conditions (the usual cats and carpets, plus now the house if full of dust as builders are in) so i don't exppect great things from this project. i just like the challenge of a species never tried before. at least some seem to be maturing  and no smell yet that i can tell. any symptoms of poor light / poor air exchange? tips?

they're definitely pink

Some of the pins have aborted but otherwise they started to develop caps and they'll mature soon!

How did you prepare the straw and how long did it take till they showed the first pins ?

I gotta give these a go, got some prints.

They look fun Shirley, and I've heard many say they're good eating, I've never tried them...yet.
