Hmmm.. an interesting question! If you go by the most people being happy and content, I'd say the Tribal systems of Polynesia. I've read that the Hawaiian tribes were very egalitarian .

which ones?

mine would probably be the one in which there was the least restriction on liberty... where people were most free to persue their own goals and live as they wished. it would be the society in which peaceful individuals would least often fall victim to force. i can't say that i know enough history to really come up with a guess as to what culture that probably is/was.

I think the Iroquois Confederacy was a pretty nice system. I recommend the book 'Forgotten Founders' (read it online at this link) by Bruce E. Johansen. The author contends that their form of government inspired the founders in the creation of the U.S. Constitution. A very interesting read...

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I think the best "governments" were the hunter-gatherer societies pre-dating civilization. Most decisions were made by the group as a whole. Leadership was informal and based on age and contribution to the community. As far as the best actual government in a state society, I think I'd have to agree with Evolving about the Iroquois Confederacy.

Personally, I think the best governments are in small groups, such as bands of hunter-gatherers or communes. I think the world would be better in a lot of ways if instead of living in cities and being ruled by a national government, we all lived in small, self-governing communes, maybe just keeping a national government to keep the peace between those communes. Such small communities are also the only places where you can find true communism similar to what Marx envisioned(except on a smaller scale of course), where people freely share everything with one another without initiation of force. Maybe I'm just daydreaming. I've never lived on a commune, so I can't speak from experience, and it's probably not as good as I'm picturing it.

Maybe so. We would certainly have to cut back on a lot of luxuries we currently enjoy. I see that as the biggest downside to the communal lifestyle. But we could have more freedom, more equality, more free time, less violence, less hunger, less government intrusion, and cause less harm to the environment. Of course, that's if you're willing to take up farming and have no private property.

I'm gonna give the conservatives who say liberals have nothing good to say about America a kick in the ass and I'm gonna say... America! Right now! I really do love this country... I loathe the right-wing dominance of our gov't at the time, but who can beat our bill of rights, our tort law, our sense of humor, or talents, and our uniqueness as a people?

We're all slaves to something or other. I might as well be a slave to myself.
