"rez-effect" in bulk substrates?

what seems like a very promising technique, the "rez-effect" method, has been shown to be pretty helpful with grain substrates. for those that don?t know, this basically entails mixing hydrated water-absorbent material into the grain at the time of birthing and casing. this boost the water content of the substrate very nicely, and it appears to greatly increase yields with grain substrates. have a look: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2240873&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#Post2276246 http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1939583&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1 these flushes were grown from grain mixed with water-absorbent (but nutrient-void) materials: z@z.com has posted pretty nice yields from using this method as well. i?m definitely gonna give it a try. i?ve always used bulk substrates, and this got me thinking... what about using this idea with a bulk substrate? a shortcoming with grain seems to be that per unit volume, it doesn?t hold enough water to make use of the nutrients. bulk substrates, by volume, do hold less nutrients than grain, and possibly more water, so the disparity is probably less pronounced, but maybe water-absorbent materials in the substrate could do it well. i?m thinking about experimenting with this. i?ll definitely just try the straight grain "rez-effect" by itself, then try it with bulk. what i?m thinking i?ll do is this: mix colonized grain 1:1 (and possibly also 1:2) with resivoir material (the technique usually calls for 2:1 grain to "rez") and let that colonize. then i?ll spawn that out and let colonize some straw or poo. i?ll bump this thread with the results then. maybe just mixing in hydrated verm with some poo before pasteurizing would work well too. how does this sound? i?m thinking about using coco-coir for the rez material. people have used vermiculite and grow wool before. maybe pH balanced peatmoss would work too.

check out this link http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1 I was looking for another but couldt find but the conclusion was verm was way supperior to coco coir. Hope this helps

I also wonder if anyone here has experimented with water polymer crystals. From the looks of the rez-effect posts as well as "casing dunking" or other forms of hydration, 6-7 good flushes are possible!

why would verm work better than coir?

it airates better, holds better moister, and doesnt mate down like cococoir

hmm... maybe if i took care not to compress it? i'm currently residing in a place that's sortof out of the way of anywhere. i don't think that getting verm is a possibility.

i'm thinking this... the airation and matting down isn't that big of a problem... when making my straw beds, i compress the straw as much as possible, and it's fine. i'm aware that coir holds less water than verm, but i gotta think that it's still pretty good.

staw is like its said straw its all straw like drinking straw poop compresses like a mother so that why you need to do so. You can just mix the two that works great also

Just curious, why is fine grade vermiculite not suitable for this? Is aeration really a goal, isnt hydration the main object?

you need to airrate cause if not it will not colinize like it should

The rez-effect is useful in fruiting from grains because they don't hold much water. Bulk subs (manure, coir) by contrast hold much more water anyway. Vermiculite is mixed with cow manure to give it a better texture.
