Sclerotia Fun - Now with Fruits! 1

I haven't been growing since about August last year, due to travel and then having family staying with us throughout the Holidays. Still had a little closet space and 150+ empty jars, so it was time for some stealthy stones. Rye berries were used as spawn, three different species (or according to some, actually these are all one species - P. mexicana): P. mexicana/Chicon Nindo, P. galindoi/ATL#7 and P. tampanensis. All of them are isolates with good sclerotia producing abilities. Masters were inoculated with agar wedges, then G2G'd to expand on 07/28/2015.
08/28/2015
These jars' been colonizing for about a month, ready to G2G again
This is how the P. mexicana/Chicon Nindo looked before expansion:

This was the P. galindoi/ATL#7:

And finally the P. tampanensis:

The Wall of Stones (these are only the Chicon Nindos):

Some harvesting pictures: I've made a colander with 1/4" galvanized wire mesh on a makeshift frame. It worked great!
These are some Chicon Nindos

Before and After

Some of the Galindoi

I didn't care to take photos of the Tampanensis, I've only had 24 jars of that. The results are the following:
P. galindoi: 6982g (145.45g/jar) P. mexicana: 6946g (115.76g/jar) P. tampanenis: 2501g (104.3g/jar)
Total wet weight: 16429g = 598.5oz = 36.21lbs
I will post the dry weight as soon as it's available. Also spawned 10 monos with some of the leftover grains.

How would you test if they are one species?
Perhaps by making a bulk substrate, where the bottom third was composed of one species and the top 2/3's was composed of another. If they were different species, the bottom 1/3 would not be able to contribute to the fruiting on top, and would be forced to sidepin heavily, if this species can even sidepin the way cubensis does.
Awesome stones.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

Cool stuff. Nice wall of jars. I've done some Galindoi truffle grows that looked that way, boxes upon boxes of jars stacked up.
I'm particularly interested in how your new Chicon Nindo fruit grows go, do please update!
It's interesting that your sclerotia yields for both Galindoi and Chicon Nindo look indentical to my typical results.

Nice report. I hope more strains of galindoi and mexicana make it into the hands of cultivators. Maybe one day another tampanenesis will be found so a more vital fruiter can be grown. I grew tampanensis many years ago but I didn't get spores from the fruits. Excellent sclerotia production on leached, pasturised cow manure. They all grew in the perlite layer I used for drainage. I was able to clean them up, but they still had some crunchy bits that weren't pleasant to chew.
How does the Jalisco mexicana selected for sclerotia compare to the Chicon Nindo for production per jar? I can't say I have read many reports of potency of of the sclerotia of these two. I have read that the fruit bodies of both are very potent.

According to an older post by SS, Jalisco is a quite poor stone producer and excellent fruit producer.

stonesun said: Here's my experience on the matter (on a scale 1-10 10 being the best):
P. galindoi/ATL#7 - stone production 7 - fruit production 8 P. mexicana/Jalisco - stone production 2 - fruit production 9 P. mexicana/A - stone production 10 - fruit production 1 P. tampanensis - stone production 5 - fruit production 9
In other words if I'd want sclerotia only, I'd go with mex/A. If I want the best over all stone/fruit producer, gotta go with ATL#7. Tampanensis being my second choice. With the mex/Jalisco got very few stones but fruited beautifully.
I think Violet said she found Galindoi to be the best for both stones and fruits, and RR said he was more impressed by Mexicana A for stone production.

Thats good information Machiavelliavore, thanks. I seem to remember reading that Stonesun had selected a good sclerotia producer of the Jalisco, but I could be wrong. That is a really low score for stone production. The Chicon Nindo seems like the mexicana with the best of both. One of the vendors here offers this strain, but they are out of stock. Hopefully someone will make prints available, instead of only syringes. I would like to run many isolations to search for the better ones.

I didn't realize Chinon Nindo was a new one. I guess whenever they are collected and perhaps domesticated they are named a new variety?
