Mycelium Balls
    #2276367 - 01/27/04 02:33 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my cake. I birthed a fully colonised cake (P.Cubensis, Golden Teacher) about 5 days ago. It started growing what I thought were balls of mycelium on the top (all white) I was worried about contams so I decided to cut these balls out. They turned out to be blobs of mushroom flesh covered in mycelium. Why are the shrooms growing this way? Any ideas? Sorry I didn't get a picture.

my guess it was hyphal knots that form into pins that form into mushrooms that was a bad idea and I would never do that again if what I said was correst you just screwed yourself out of some pins but I could be wrong

fee is definitely right....they were hyphal knots, and yes ya fucked yourself over out of some pins, but more will come man...be PATIENT

You Guys are probably all right. I should have left it but I'm curious and have quite a few cakes to play with at the moment. These balls were almost and inch in diameter, like big growths of some sort. It almost seemed like the mycelium completely covered a pin and then it developed underneath. I though it was a result of to high humidity.

By the size of what you are talking about, we are not discussing your average knot. Sounds like some freaky growth as you say, not superbly worrying.

I think you are right. I have never seen a knot an inch in diameter. Sounds like to high rh. What tek are you using for humidity?

I'm using pf tek with paper towel for humidity, Here in South Africa I'm battling to track down Perlite, I can get verm. easily. Our average day where I live is about 85% to 95% humidity on it's own somedays higher. My last two cakes were fine. This one went freak, but it did colonise fairly quickly about 14 days (home gound brf)
I'm gonna keep an eye on it and see how it goes from here. Thanks for all the comments guys, it's much appreciated.
