In class, someone reported that the urushiol builds up in our systems after repeated exposures, so the ones who are less sensitive will eventually get it if continually exposed to it.

Pretty much, but there are some people who are immune. The problem is that there's no way to know you've turned until you're scratching. I've never gotten it, but I'm not going to stick it in my mouth to find out if I'll get it now! LOL

Never eat anything poison oak has touched. Some people are immune, most are not, and it can kick in at any time. Heat does not make it safe, that's asinine. Breathing in the smoke can land you in the emergency room quick. Toxicodendron species are no joke.

Dys said: Is anyone else immune to poison ivy and oak?
I'm in it all winter every year for the last 20 years picking mushrooms. I don't really catch it, but I have brought it home to my wife several times because its on my skin and clothes. She does not like that much...
If I get the oil on an especially sensitive area like my arm pit, or behind my knees, it can result in a couple small red bumps that itch for a day or so then vanish. I have never had it spread.
Despite this, I don't push my luck. I have also heard that "immunity" wears off after excessive exposure, so I always wear long sleeves and pants. I try to avoid it as much as I can, but if a fat Chanterelle is in a patch of oak I can't resist and in I go.
So far, after many years I have only had very minor reactions a couple times (as stated above). And on some days I spend hours hiking right through it.

Everyone here is right on the money and are totally correct about these plants. It does depend on alot of reasons and there is a smallish pattern. My personal experience is I'm half Lakota and can pick stinging nettles all day and not have any reactions at all. I've seen Anglo-Saxon not have reactions to plants that most would. Building up to reactions and building an immunity both acure.

I always worry that my dog is going to bring it home on her fur and give it to everyone, has never been a problem though.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone being immune to stinging nettle, I hate that stuff. I hear it's pretty tasty and nutritious when cooked though.
