HPPD - Do you have it?
    #2273769 - 01/26/04 06:12 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I've only used a few psychedelics in my life, but one of them has been shrooms. Now I don't know what the criteria is for HPPD, but honestly whenever I sit in the dark and proceed to stare at a certain spot, I see things. Whether it is black and gray masses moving over my entire field of vision, or random lines or spots of light, sometimes colored but mainly not. Sometimes when I close my eyes, usually when I'm tired, my imagination can take hold and actual images of thoughts will appear, however brief and vague. It might go without saying that the imagination of some people is stronger than others, and I've always been able to "see" something in my head, but now I'm talking of actual perception, akin to mushroom perception. I can count the times I've done this drug, which means, at least for me, I haven't done it too often. I'm just curious as to other's reaction to this, because whereas I see things now on a daily if not hourly basis, they don't effect me in any other way aside from having a nice little show whenever I want.

I don't think I have HPPD but I can say that my use of psychedelics has resulted in me noticing much more "visual phenomenon" that I never realized before

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

I have never had lingering visual distortions from mushroom use but after spending a few months taking high doses of lsd almost on a daily basis I had lingering trails and a hard time reading things far away because everything would swirl and melt together. Not to mention words would crawl over pages of books if I tried to sit down and enjoy a novel. After about half a year that went away to the point where reading wasnt such a task even though the trails never went away and I honestly cant imagine life without them, until I discovered 2ct2 and now its about impossible for me to take notes from the back of a lecture hall due to that whole melting, morphing ordeal that happens when I try to focus on something far away. Cant say that I'm complaining though.

I believe I have a mild case. It increases when I'm tired or in the few weeks after a trip.

And yes, I can distinguish between this and just stuff you see when tired normally.

lol I really hope you're not worried about that.

There's nothing wrong with you, even if drugs have changed your imagination.

Hrethic, I get those swirling patterns and morphing designs all the time. Especially when Im tired. I can usually ignore them but I can also play them out if I want too. I remember a few nights ago, I was really noticing them and this time the designs panned out to figures-cartoons of neghborhood people walking there dogs and continuing life in a Cat in the Hat type neighborhood, then the visions remained as I drifted into a dream where they became more lucid, vivid and continued to morph on into there endless dreamlike scenarios. Anyways, even though I have done shrooms a few times as well as LSD, I remember getting these visions while I was a little boy and me and my friends would stay up for hours and just tell eathother what we saw. So basically, they are not drug related at all. I can usually intensify mine if I press against my eyeslids.

My opinion: HPPD is a misdiagnosed form of PTSD. These minor visual disturbances are always there, its only the use of psychadelics that bring it to the surface of everyday perception.

"These minor visual disturbances are always there, its only the use of psychadelics that bring it to the surface of everyday perception. "

What lateralus said is what I believe is the truth of the matter. I often see these wirly patterns and all type tricks the light does to my eyes. Often if I see a bright spot and then face away from the bright shape I will still see the shape but in a dark shadowy type of form... the image quickly drifts out of my focus. I'm interested in mediumship (interaction with spirits) and often see If I can see a spirit which often leads me to seeing alot of weird shit hovering in the air, but its normal, I think, if not... I dont care.

I'm not worried nor care much about it, actually I kind of like it. I was just interested in seeing what other people thought. I don't have that much contact with the drug using community where i live, so i really appreciate all the feed back i got to just one question. You guys are awesome! (and by guys i mean everyone of course...  )

I'm in the same boat as you, Hrethic. The first time I ever tripped was a strong Mescaline dose around a year ago. Since then I always catch little things. Walls breathe when I look long enough, patterns emerge, i often getting fleeting CEVs of things I'm thinking about. I think it's pretty neat.

Self-diagnosis is notoriously inaccurate. Especially on something as complex as the brain. The most likely cause of this is media suggested illness. You read a story in the press and start looking for it in your own head until you find it.

Similar to the media scare stories about overhead powerlines causing illness. Dozens of people in one town read the stories in the media and started complaining of chronic headaches and "brain damage" from the powerlines above their house. It turned out the powerline hadn't been switched on for 20 years.

Even more inaccurate is diagnosing someone else in a forum :-P
