A wide mouth (short) pint jar is max for PF tek... The regular mouth (talls) can be used but is very prone to stalling out... Those are good for WBS and Rye Berries... You could try to use a quart for those substrates also (but will take time and don't forget to shake!)., However a quart jar is not recommended for use with BRF... Hope this helps! Peace & Love!

I am constructing a new, larger glove box and need to purchase powder-free sleeves which stretch from my upper arms down to my wrists.  Any suggestions on what kind of material or brand I should look for on these sleeves?

Walm*rt sells an entire suit for less than $10. ( I found one for about $7 last year in the paint section). The one I have identified that it restricted 0.3 micron particles - which is the size used to test HEPA filters.

I found sleeves that were about 3.00 but after shipping the suit was cheaper. I have one with a hood. I can just put on the upper part and leave it zipped or unzipped like a jacket. I gives me the protection of sleeves and covers my back and shoulders as well. It does not have any powder on it.

If you are thinking of attaching the sleeves to the box, read up on still air boxes. I glove box is overkill and the ability to move items in the arm holes is invaluable in a SAB.

Do grain jars have to be pressure canned or can they be water bath canned? I read that some contaminants can survive boiling temp (212F) and that grain jars should be pressure canned... what about BRF cakes? I have a book about growing psilocybes, but they say that you can steam bath or pressure cook. The book kinda sucks to be honest... it has a lot of pictures but not a lot of details on the process.

Anyway I have tried BRF widemouth pint jars, quart jars of both popcorn and wheatberries, and liquid culture jars, all were steambath canned. The only jars that grew anything were the liquid culture. And then my incubator malfunctioned and got to 103F and im not sure if my liquid cultures died or not... luckily I had drawn out some syringes and stored them in the fridge.

If my liquid cultures died, can I revive them with another inoculation of live liquid culture? Will the new mycelium consume the dead mycelium? Should I re-sterilize it first, or is it still sterile since it only had mycelium in it before?

So do I need to use a pressure canner to re-sterilize my BRF & grain jars that arent growing that were steambath canned? My pressure cooker is small & doesnt fit quart jars so I would need to split those up into pints. Or is steam-bath okay if you cook it for a certain length of time? I cooked mine at a low boil for an hour and I thought that would be sufficient. But nothing is growing... no contaminants that I can see... idk what is going on. Does H2O2 kill mycelium? I have been reusing syringes for liquid culture by rinsing them with H2O2 and then drawing liquid culture into it. I also set my LC syringes in a cup of H2O2 before inoculating a jar with it.

I really dont know what Im doing wrong because if my jars were showing contamination, then it would obviously mean my technique is not sterile enough. But since theres no contams, at first I thought my spores & liquid culture were bad. And that also doesnt make sense because I obtained my spores and liquid culture from someone who was growing them successfully. So then I thought maybe I had stored my spores and culture too long in the fridge and it was no longer viable, but then I finally got a liquid culture growing which proved that they are viable! So now my only question is why cant I grow some grain spawn or BRF cakes?

*sigh* this whole mushroom growing thing isnt as easy as I thought it would be...

I'd just wanna add it here...

Getting your grains properly hydrated(especially not too wet) is VERY VERY IMPORTANT.

Hi I forgot to put tinfoil on the top of my substrate jars when I sterilised them in my pressure cooker.
Should I start all over again?

Thanks!

Are we talking PF cakes? If we are, then are your holes taped shut? If you don't have a good enough way to keep water from entering through whatever your filter is, then yes you must start over  sorry.

How or where?  I am confused.  So I want to post some pictures and explanations with what I have studied so far on the internet and what I have gotten from pictures.  I have several different types and a few I am 95% sure of and some I am about 85% sure on.  I just want a second set of eyes and maybe a small chat or discussion on what I am posting.  This is my first post and first question.  What is my next step?  Where would I ask an Identification question with a pretty detailed explanation with spore print climate info and everything else?If I post something how will I know it has been responded to?  I want to identify some fungi that I have found.  Thanks!

There is a forum for identification. Start a thread there and they should be able to help you out. Go to the forum index, and at the top right of the list it'll say 'post'. Click that and ask away

Steam bath sterilization ONLY works for BRF PF cakes. You need a PC for grains. That's the short answer. Pick a tek and follow it to a T. Try that link. When you get cakes down a bit, then save up for a PC and you can try other methods. Don't mix and match teks until you fully understand what you're doing. Don't re-sterilize, just start over and get all the steps in your head--to where you do everything g almost automatically. If you decide to buy those from RR, it's only $9 and worth every penny to start things right. But you can watch a lot of it free. Good luck, brother and hang in there:mushroom2:

Plus, ditch the incubator. Those are typically only problematic, and usually unnecessary. You can safely leave BRF jars on your shelf with the foil off to colonize.

Holy shit. Wish I'd seen this a year ago.
damn. WTG with that grow!

I wonder if the extra cooking time of the grains actually aided in their colonization, and therefor their fruitings? Or am I just stoned?

I think you're stoned lol, but farmers tend to build large steamers that will do over 100qts at a time, easier then running a PC all week.

Help with identification? [Re: cronicr]

I found all these today is southern Oregon. I've read a couple different identification threads but I don't trust my judgement, as it was my first pick. Is anything here edible and containing psilocybin? Halp! Broke and really wanna trip.

I guess what I mean is, easier digestible nutes for the mycelium in grains steamed so long. I dunno. It was just a thought that occurred to me in relation to cooked casing layers. Like i read on shroomerite pasteurizing coir longer so it would break down a bit, and it was making it easier to colonize. Is this not logical in the case of the grains?

But you were right, I was pretty stoned.:bigblunt:
