Pasty plates should work for micopogation but you would have to change the neuttient source. I don't see plant tissue growing well on potato flakes and sugar.

Where and how do you store them so they don't dry out?

I just put them in a tote at room temperature. I don't do anything special. My GE holes are extremely small and stuffed with polly covered in 2 layers of micropore tape. So they don't lose much moisture. I also pour them fairly thick. I've got some colonised plates in my fridge that are over a year and a half old that still have water droplets in them. Honestly plates drying out isn't somthing I ever consider. It just never really happens to me unless I leave a colonised plate out at room temperature for like a year.
I'm about to transfer to a set of plates I made back in August. They don't look dry at all. Hell there's still a big of condensation on the sides of them.

This plate has been stored for about two months. It still has little condensation. It doesn't bother me though.

Do you foil your twist-tops because they have GE mods?

We put foil on them for the PC so they don't get wet on top. I keep the foil on until I use it so I'm sure it's still a sterile vessel. Also, the foil keeps the lid secure so I know there is no chance of anything going on if I'm moving them around. I love pastyplates so much. They really changed the game for me!
But basically if you're going to PC something, you protect it a bit in foil always. At least that's how it seems in my research. Or am I missing something here?

Ah I see. One of my twist tops (unmodified) sealed during the PC and the lid was a bit concaved. It created a pretty decent vacuum.. luckily I was able to open it somewhat gently in the sab. Is that what you're talking about or did it literally cave in?

I know that, but I ask because I experienced your same confusion when I first started getting into these pp5 plates. Apparently, you don't need to foil the twist tops because you can leave the lids unmodified and unsealed during the PC (see Violets teks). I did my first batch of 8 16oz pp5 twist tops about a week and a half ago with no foil during the PC, and they all came out dazzling. I had always thought that foil was absolutely necessary, I figured the steam would get up under the sides and completely fuck the water content of anything, but I guess that's not the case. It makes sense to foil lids that have filter material that needs to be prevented from getting wet. Even though I foil my grain jars, the SFD GE ports are slightly wet sometimes after the PC. I just leave the foil off after inoculation and they dry up within a day.

Precisely, although I don't remember it having the vacuum effect when I opened it in SAB.
Yeah mine sucked in quite a bit of air.. so far so good though

The foil is just to keep water from getting in through the filter. If you don't have filter you don't need foil. Some people like to use foil anyway.

Lets say for argument's sake that it didn't matter if the filter got wet or not. Contams wouldn't colonize through. Would foil still be used to protect the water content inside the container whatever it may be?

It shouldn't have to. If foil is keeping the water content better, you need to work on something.. Like the water level of the PC.

he's saying "Forget about contams for a second, can having foil on the lid vs not affect the moisture level inside the jar?".
I agree with Mad's response more or less.

That depends on what kind of filter you use. If we are still talking about an unmodified lid than no. Foil won't affect the moisture content.

Yeah I was more or less asking: is the foil mainly for protecting the filter from getting soaked, or for maintaining the moisture content that was in the container before the PC, or both?
