CBS censors anti-Bush ad
    #2271207 - 01/25/04 10:12 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Taken from the "America slides even further down the shithole" files:

During this year's Super Bowl, you'll see ads sponsored by beer companies, tobacco companies, and the Bush White House. But you won't see the winning ad in MoveOn.org Voter Fund's Bush in 30 Seconds ad contest. CBS refuses to air it.

Meanwhile, the White House and Congressional Republicans are on the verge of signing into law a deal which Senator John McCain (R-AZ) says is custom-tailored for CBS and Fox, allowing the two networks to grow much bigger. CBS lobbied hard for this rule change; MoveOn.org members across the country lobbied against it; and now the MoveOn.org ad has been rejected while the White House ad will be played. It looks an awful lot like CBS is playing politics with the right to free speech.

Of course, this is bigger than just the MoveOn.org Voter Fund. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) submitted an ad that was also rejected. We need to let CBS know that this practice of arbitrarily turning down ads that may be "controversial" ? especially if they're controversial simply because they take on the President ? just isn't right.

To watch the ad that CBS won't air and sign the petition to CBS to run these ads, go to:
http://www.moveon.org/cbs/ad/

MoveOn.org will deliver the petition by email directly to CBS headquarters.

It probably has more to do with the audience they are targetting and no one really want to think during the super bowl, it is a time to drink.

No it has everything to do with politics.

Rubbish. If they're going to allow the White House to place an ad, they should do the same for their opponents. During most football games, I agree that the target audience wouldn't care much about it, but this is the Superbowl, an American tradition. I guarantee you that it'll be reaching more than just Bush supporters.

I think is just business, the move on as is probably very clever, but will be an intrusion in game the white house ad won't.

How do you figure? It's not like there haven't been any political ads in previous Super Bowls.

They probably think they won't be getting much repeat business from moveon, they probably won't.

What? Who won't be getting repeat business from moveon? This is the SuperBowl. Advertisers pay hefty sums of money to get an advertising spot. It sounds like moveon has the money, but the network won't allow it to be aired. This is pure censorship. No way around that. If they weren't allowing Bush's ads to be aired, I might agree with you.

it's a private company deciding not to air a particular advertisement.

Ok, if you want to get into semantics, it's not EXACTLY censorship, since the government isn't doing it, but it's the same concept. They're preventing certain ideas from being expressed.

BTW, I think we can scratch CBS off of the "liberal media" checklist.

they are not preventing things from being expressed.

they are only refusing to take part in expressing them.

Only feelgood pollitical messages are allowed during the superbowl. No mudslinging.
