I think a certain burden of this can be placed on the 99%. Saying one thing and doing another is extremely common practice (a personal pet peeve) in most American households, especially with children. This mentality then carries over into other areas such as politics, economics and life style. In example, knowing and talking about how politics is corrupt and the rep. Vs. Dem. Setup is bullshit, but then going to vote for one of those parties. For talking about financial responsibility with credit cards in the wallet. For saying your eco friendly while driving a car and eating Wal-Mart beef and not recycling our upcoming everything you can think of.

These are things that are pretty common place and socially acceptable as long as is kept semi private.

The idea of credit alone is incredibly irresponsible for the most part.

Our modern culture absolutely takes all these things as given standards and sometimes even boasts about their luxuriously gluttonous lifestyle. Or bragging about financial status or lack there of.

This path of wishy washy behavior is easy to prey upon by people with determination to gain rank in these areas. Billionaires, politicians, even non profit organizations use these cultural ambiguous stand points as a foot hold to exploit fears, weaknesses, and ignorance.

No one wants to be the singular to stand apart loudly and break away while in the middle of a sea of automata. This would/could have immense consequences for the ego. And we're hardwired to avoid that for the most part.
