One feet Substrate In Rubbermaid: Problems?
    #2270453 - 01/25/04 02:29 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Friend is going to use a rubbermaid, mix straw with colonized grain, and make a one feet layer of substrate. Planning on spraying walls to keep humidity up. What problems should he look out for?

#1 thing to look for is slow colinization... other than that I think it should be a go!

Problems will be that that is a big big spawning and the bigger you get the more risk. So be careful with sterility and try to spawn with appropriate amount of spawn and you should be fine.

If you are using the rubbermaid as the fruiting chamber you will need almost no misting what so ever thats the only way I do casings and I rarly mist to keep humidity heres a pic of such a casing this pic was from about 5 days agao and I never misted during colinization wich took about 11 days and hasnt been misted since

I've heard that someone did an experiment with substrate depth and any more then 6" wasn't beneficial.

I can't see how that makes any sense at all. Substrate is substrate until it gets to a certain height? I don't think so. I think maybe what that person said was the mushroom fruit size won't get any bigger. Who knows.

I think that is korrect. That much straw will probably need ventilation on all sides, not just on top.

Thanks.

Ill probably make it 5 inches then.

I saw a grow log forum where a guy pressed down on his substrate of straw and grain, is this necessary?

It will colonize faster and expend less nutrients during colonization if it is compressed.

with my method as I showed in the pic above you do need to mist during fruiring since you are fanning if the walls dont have condinsation then mist that would be the only time

Sounds good.

How deep was that substrate fee? And what was ur total dry yield?

Also, a deep substrate can get quite warm in the center. Too warm if you are planning on incubating. And yes, compress that stuff as best you can.

It was about 4 inches and I am in the process of patching the casing as we speak

That's a lot of straw. The optimum is around 4-6 inches. You should try a straw log if you want to use that much straw and you have the space required. No misting or fanning necessary. Let us know how it turns out.

increased depth will give you increased yeilds but will decrease your cropping efficiency. in other words, you'll get more mushrooms, but less per quantity of substrate. making it much deeper than a foot can cause problems due to heat buildup. IMO, 8-10 inches is plenty for a deep bed.
