Mimosa Hostilis: Bottom leaflets turning yellow, then falling off. * 1
    #22686875 - 12/22/15 01:58 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Can anyone give some insight as to what I need to change so the bottom leaves stop falling off? This has been going on since I got the plant (I did not germinate this tree myself, but the leaves were all green and healthy when I first got it).

Super cute plant :tongue2::sun:

How tall is that and how many leaflets have fallen off?

How old is it?

Is that organic soil or a soiless mix?

Do you fertilize/with what and how often?

How often do you water?

Whats the temperature in the grow area?

How much light is it getting?

Thanks

Its 5-6" tall, two of the bottom leaves have completely fallen off, so 12 plus about 4 or five which you can see in the picture. The soil was advertised to be organic, I havent been fertilizing, I water whenever the soil dries out on the top layer. The temperature is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and lets just say the lighting is for now just an LED lamp.

Start sticking your finger into the soil a few inches to see how wet it is near the rootzone, its possible youre underwatering if youre going by what the surface looks like.

Your temperture is low, I would try to bring that up to like 78-80f. That plant probably likes some humidity too...

How many watts is the LED? It should be fine if its close enough and strong enough. I love LED lights.

If youre not feeding that is likely your issue. Leaves or in this case leaflets start dropping from the bottom up when a plant is nitrogen defficient. The reason for this is because in order to survive the plant needs to keep the growing tip alive, the bottom of the plant is not as important for long term survival or reproduction, so the plant pulls resources from the lower leaves to send up to the top leaves when nutrients in the soil are in short supply. Since nitrogen is the most abundantly used nutrient it gets depleted first from the lower leaves and its defficieny will show first.

The reason it drops the leaves instead of trying to keep them around for when more nutrients are availabel is because nitrogen is at the center of a chlorophyl molecule, so without sufficient nitrogen in lower leaves due to translocation up to the growing tips, theres no chlorophyl, which means the leaves are literally dead weight as they are not photosynthesizing, so the plant abandons them.

I recommend an organic fertilizer something like a 5-3-4 fish based fertilizer and feed with that every 3 or so waterings.

In my (limited) experience M. hostillis likes it hot and dry.

It is also a legume, which means it fixes it's own nitrogen with the help of bacteria...so be careful with higher N fertilizers.

Make sure not to overwater too. Organic soils can hold a lot of water, sometimes the dry top layer is deceptive. I usually try to go by weight of the pot to know when it's time to water. Overwatering will cause yellowing as well.

Could also be stress related if the plant was recently shipped to you.

Overall though that seedling looks pretty good.

I haven't been able to stop that either no matter what I tried on the ones I've grown. I may have been too conservative on increasing the fertilizer though, but I didn't want to burn/kill the plant. Next spring I think all start some more and try and see.

The few I've gotten past seedling stage don't seem to be troubled by dropping the leaves, they just don't look all that great for a while. It may be something that MH just does.

Thanks for the info guys. Ill be getting some fertilizer soon.

Also something interesting... Was pulling apart some marijuana nugs and found a seed in there. Threw a single seed off to the side in the pot and just found this. Totally wasnt expecting this. Looks like i'm taking care of another little one.
