patlal, this is quite possibly the stupidest thing you've ever posted--how do you not see the parallels?--does erowid only list the information of drugs deemed "safe" or only provides information to people deemed "expert"
any mushroom guide worth the paper it's printed on (especially if it deals with edibles) will make copious mention misidentification risks
instead of giving her the means to educate herself in the safe harvest of wild mushrooms, you provided her with unnecessary censorship--knowledge requires no gatekeeper
besides, are you honestly suggesting that one needs to have a background in mycology and a microscope to safely identify morels? how about chantrelles? pines?

no, but i'm serious--you do not need a background in mycology nor a microscope to safely pick edible mushrooms, and withholding information is the opposite of harm reduction
have you ever gone wild harvesting?

I've dabbled but I'm not really into it. Even if I was 100% sure I found an edible mushroom, I still wouldn't eat it. In the grocery store I trust.

You did the right thing Patlal. You might have saved her life!
But deadly shrooms are pretty rare, but they do exist.
She sounded a little to eagar to eat wild mushrooms. She needs more experience IDing shrooms, like in MHandI forum!
Now the question is how much does Patlal know about shrooms?

he already admitted to having little experience harvesting wild edibles--he seems to be under the impression that only scientists and grocery stores can safely identify mushrooms
instead of making this lady fear mushrooms as much as he does, he could have simply cautioned her about the dangers and suggested an easily indentified species or two to start her off
and members here agreeing, "probably saved her life"... my god! the fear mongering--these all seem the opinions of people more accustomed to buying their food plastic wrapped, rather than digging it up from the dirt

For a bunch of dudes posting on a site about mushrooms, most of you sound pretty mycophobic.
There are lots of mushrooms that are relatively easy to identify, and great to eat. Most field guides are pretty good about telling you if there is a similar looking mushroom that could make you sick. Maybe next time you just tell the customer to be careful, not eat anything she's not 100% sure about.
Thats harsh. If you fire a guy for having good intentions you're not a good boss. At the end of the day Patlal had good intentions and his customer's health in mind. Correct or not he did his best to do the right thing and thats all you can ask of your staff.
Be true to yourself, be true to others, always always do the right thing and have a shroomy day.
If you let your employees turn away business because they are holier-than-thou know-it-alls then your a terrible boss. It's a book store, they are supposed to sell books, not ask 20 questions to determine if a book is safe for the customer.
Sure you can talk to the employee and let him know he made a mistake if you think he did. But you don't fire a good employee who actually cares about your customers over a thing like that. You give him a pat on the back and tell him how nice it is that he cares about the customers so much. If you're a manager you need to reconsider how you treat your inferiors. If you don't reevaluate, you'll end up with a staff who doesn't care about the job or the customers, has a high employee turnover, and hurts the business.

Better safe than sorry. She clearly wasn't gonna study that shit in depth and develop a strrtong interest in the matter (I just knew). The way she reacted, she probably thought that poisonous mushrooms only grew in the Amazon or something.
I don't understand how going out and seeking knowledge in a book would suggest she's not going to study it in depth.
This failure of this thread is sickening. On all Web forums too come on now dude.
There's a ton of misinformation in this thread. Depressing.
