Nice display of the variation in ovoids koods. Everyone of them beautiful and looking like a different species of Psilocybe.

I wonder what affects such a diversity in phenology.  I also wonder if some of these could be different species, like caerulescens perhaps.  Again, I feel there has to be some delineation between specimens that have an umbo and those that don't.  Is it possible for it to vary and still be the same species?

I believe ovoids with very different phenotypes have been sequenced and found to be very closely genetically related. Alan could prob tell you more.

A couple shots from today of yesterday's neat ovoid find.

I usually make a point to post different shots here than in the SF Bay area thread so as not to be too redundant, but...damn it...I wasted 45 minutes today strugglin' to get pics that were in focus...and only ended up with these two. Sometimes I hate the iPhone.

I wish Alan Rockefeller was around, those really don't look like ovoids to me.  Especially given the region, I'm skeptical. Could it be subaeruginosa?

I sent some various looking ovoids to Jan in Czech Rep. for research...I guess they will be broken down into percentages of active chems as well as phenotypes. I chose several different sizes and shapes (all from this fall and lol, now winter season). Some had heavy bluing and some not. I have not tested any myself, the old fashioned way:wink:...but a friend tripped lightly on a half of a gram...so much, that he said he didn't want to drive.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to Jan's results.:mushroom2:

If I remember my readings of past Bay Area threads correctly, some years ago Auweia found an interesting patch of Psilocybes that came to be IDed as P. subaeruginosa. In the end, however, after being sent off for testing, they were found to be nothing other than an unusual pheno of P. ovoideocystidiata.

Here's my question.  Where exactly did ovoids originate, and if people are finding them on the west coast, and the Midwest and east coast, how did they get across the Rockies?  Were they introduced somehow?

They are commonly found near riparian (river dwelling) species, especially Japanese knotweed.  They like river banks and flood plains.

Also, they're woodlovers, so keep an eye out for sticks and wood that has washed up onto the banks and been buried.  If you see that, you're in prime territory.

Ovoids native to Ohio river valley [Re: koods]
    #22692595 - 12/23/15 09:01 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

"I would really like to know if ovoids existed in North America a hundred years ago."

Evidence gathered from Native American Mounds located in the middle of where ovoids were first reported strongly suggests that not only were ovoids present, but that they were venerated by Native Americans, and probably used in religious rituals.

A "mushroom effigy" found at Hopewell mound was covered in copper, which was quite precious at that time.  Copper, as it oxidizes, takes on a blue-green hue, similar to ovoids.  The use of something precious would suggest it was not a child's toy, but an item of special significance.

The shape of the cap suggests an ovoid, and the size suggests it represents an ovoid rather than a blue foot.

https://books.google.com/books?id=nWlhCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA166&lpg=PA166&dq=copper+mushroom+native+american+effigy&source=bl&ots=8gPQW_a-yO&sig=3bkCypM6MW_wouhF2IcaChiv-IE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjy9sbKxPPJAhWE7yYKHSvODWwQ6AEIHDAA#v=onepage&q=copper%20mushroom%20native%20american%20effigy&f=false

https://books.google.com/books?id=1erz0jDvE6oC&pg=PA28&lpg=PA28&dq=fort+ancient+mushroom+effigy&source=bl&ots=qX9fczVcM1&sig=-dA8991WgtNCf4dZAXIch0Fz_1E&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjOg8X6w_PJAhUFZCYKHUrkBCAQ6AEIHDAA#v=onepage&q=fort%20ancient%20mushroom%20effigy&f=false

https://books.google.com/books?id=c7PGcrZSjKYC&pg=PA184&lpg=PA184&dq=hopewell+mound+mushroom+wand&source=bl&ots=aaxc62JkMD&sig=94yRwktPiDHoetq4hDhglJLUQus&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiG5LfT0fPJAhXGRCYKHcbgCboQ6AEIJDAC#v=onepage&q=hopewell%20mound%20mushroom%20wand&f=false

I am of the opinion that not only were ovoids found in the wild, but the Native Americans quickly learned how to encourage their growth, perhaps by building small mounds of wood debris, inoculated with mycelium, covered in earth and grass.

Native Americans were intricately in touch with their environment.  They genetically engineered corn.  The shamans knew the use of every plant.  It would be incredulous to believe that they didn't see the ovoids growing on woody debris piles, and the associated mycelium, and not figure out how to "help it along".

If Koods and Stevo can figure it out, it would have been a breeze for the natives.

Actually, that reminds me...Weren't there some Native American images of mushrooms with green caps and red stems?
