Hunt in the spring - it is difficult enough then an it is difficult enough then without piles of leaves on top - prob could still find some gyms or oysters

Gman, It got pretty cold over the past couple nights here, might have froze them. How many days would you say it has been taking on average for ovoids to go from pin to spore producing mushroom? I would guess it would be faster in the warmer days of spring...

Mickey-my experience has been about four days for something like the ones in the foreground of the previous pic to go to somethinglike the one at the rear which isn't quite mature – for what it's worth I haven't been able to get prints from full caps that are fully opened and seemingly mature

The few I found this fall took a couple of days to start showing a print, but eventually dropped a decent amount. Maybe it is the lower humidity? Gymnopilus picked around the same time dropped very heavy spores.

Strange color for ovoids. You sure they aren't cyans?

Yes I'm sure they're ovoids...look:

EDIT:  That's what I was sayin' before...that out here in the Bay area, besides the tan colored ones, we've got green ones and bright orange ones. I'm actually sittin' in my car right now next to a patch of orange ones from last year...just waitin' on the rain to die down so I can check if they're finally fruiting.

EDIT 2:  At the known spot last mentioned...nada. I hope to make it to the 'greenies' spot today too.

You're doing it wrong   Eh, Portland humor probably doesn't translate

I was really skeptical about the ovoids David was finding in the bay, but he showed examples and got them an ID.  If you haven't already David, I bet there are some people out there that would just love to get their hands on samples of the different ovoids for microscopy.  Prints too.

I can't believe the variation in them.  Up here in Portland the common ones I find in the fall are squat, tan/opaque, chunky and HUGE.  My hunting partner found some the size of his palm.

Good thing I got some stem butts from that patch :datass:

A few specimens at the 'greenie' spot this afternoon.

Mr. Piggy - Perhaps I'll start printing these and the orange ones.

Not sure who has seen the DNA work done by Alan Rockefeller, but cubensis and ovoids are closely related. Ovoids are not as close to other wood lovers like stuntzii as first suggested. David, you mentioned ovoids smell like cubes, and I also noticed this. I mentioned in another thread that ovoids might do well on leached horse manure and wood chips. Like Koods has mentioned, ovoids run well on grass, so horse manure should work.

The weather is looking good! Hope to find some winter ovoids soon.

DavidReishi, those look more like P. cyanofriscosa aka P. alleni in my opinion.

All the fruits at the 'greenies' patch have a definite veil remnant, which of course is never found on allenii. Also, I've noticed that while allenii can turn an olive green color, it's only when they're past their prime...whereas the fruits at the above patch are born green. The pics below, showing the veil remnant and green pins, are from last year at the same spot. (In the first pic there's no green color because the green disappears as soon as they begin to dry.)

MickeySpliff - Interestingly I've only noticed the cubensis odor on the bright orange specimens from yesterday...and it was quite strong.

EDIT:  Doh!...I should've figured you guys were referring to the orange ones earlier in the day. What tipped me off that they're ovoids, and not allenii, was simply the veil remnant on the stems. But even before I clipped some I knew something was strange about 'em because it was the only time I came upon a patch and couldn't immediately decipher whether they were allenii or cyans. Also, as I mentioned in the Bay area thread, they smelled notably different from allenii and cyans.

Either way, I think some wood lovers are petty tough to distinguish sometimes.  Does anyone happen to have any thoughts on what distinguishes the different species, macroscopically? I know cyans have a wavy margin, azures an orange pointy cap without being hygrophonous, ovoids a more tan hygrophonous cap, and alleni look similar to ovoids but have a more smooth umbo.  Did I get that all pretty much right?

There's no one thing about ovoids. They have so much variety, I honestly don't know how I've become able to spot them from five feet away and almost never be wrong.

All of those were within a foot of each other.

Sometimes they are blue, or even have blue and and orangish and tan circular stripes. Sometimes the cap is rounded, flat, or upturned. Or even shaped like a funny hat.

Sometimes they are just an orangish tan color
