fixable mistake?
    #22672883 - 12/18/15 06:16 PM (4 years, 8 months ago)

I just realized that mono's are for bulk and SG's for cakes.

I have 12 cakes in a 66 quart with:

-2 (1.5 inch) holes on each side w/ polyfil

-1 (1.5 inch) hole under each handle w/polyfil

- three inches of wet perlite on the bottom

2 of the cakes have been in there 9 days and just started pinning two days ago. All the pins are pretty small and SLOWLY growing.

10 of the cakes were put in two days ago.

humidity @99%

temp @70-75

grow light two feet above 12 hours each day

fan and mist every couple of hours

fixable? adjustable?

if they've got enough FAE and humidity it's not that big of an issue, they don't have eyes to look which container they've been put into

Growth speed can be genetics. Just finished Burma and aa+ that were prepared and fruited at the same time and the Burma grew literally twice as fast as the aa+.

every couple of hours suffices for FAE (one minute lid flapping) w/ this chamber?

If you are having fae problems then construct a sgfc. Do whatever works for you

I have an aquarium air pump. Would putting a hose through one of the top holes (running an hour or two a day)  fix the issue?

I don't have a drill handy for construction.

they were proven not to provide enough FAE. either make some holes somehow or stick with the fanning

I will get a drill. thanks....

Just out of curiosity, why does bulk work better w/ the different FAE system in the chamber?

it's not just bulk that needs FAE, it's the living beings growing there that need fresh air.
mushrooms use oxygen and toss carbon dioxide like animals, unlike plants which do the opposite during photosynthesis.

I mean .. why does the mono tub work better for bulk than it does for BRF?

I understand why a SG is not good for  bulk, but why the other way around if it produces large fruits for the bulk? ...why does bulk need less FAE?

brain FAE [Re: CaptainCrunchy]
    #22673216 - 12/18/15 07:34 PM (4 years, 8 months ago)

Why does bulk thrive with less FAE?

Is it because there is more substrate than cakes?

Why not pull the polyfil (for bulk) when the bulk casing is fully colonized?

An sgfc works with the natural air currents to draw the fresh air thru the bottom of the sgfc an to maintain proper RH at the cakes surface.

A mono tub lets fresh air exchange a lil different and has a larger surface.

Old school members like fahster use a mono to fruit cakes. I would personally crumble an case with coir an tray it in a mono tub if ya really don't wanna drill holes in a tub. Lol

Also some members will pull the poly fil out of the bottom  holes when they fruit different varieties of mushrooms

so the RH at different levels of the chamber are taken into consideration for holes (because u mentioned RH @cake surface)? ...that it's more than what the gage says?

Do the old schoolers that use monos for cakes also do it without the poly fil?

Cakes can really dry out, so IMHO you want to use a good amount of poly in the bottom holes, a medium amount in the top holes. I'd also throw something under them, like 2-3" moist perlite. My most success with cakes has been when I've kept them glistening with moisture a lot of the time, with tons of fresh air. But I don't know that much, I bought a PC and when to bulk because cakes can be a pain in the butt, more managing.

Or... you can have have great luck by shredding your cakes and spawning into that new monotub of yours,. It would be a bit of a longer time investment (for re-consolidation), but not much. Maybe a few days?

The holes in a mono are placed and stuffed to allow air to flow easily thru one an not the other. Most will stuff tightly at sub level an loosely on the top holes.

When you take the poly fil out of the top holes it lets for alot of FAE.

Like dankington says alot of FAE will dry the cakes out

and with a sgfc the perlite allows for the fresh air to maintain proper humidity on the cake surface with misting an fanning.

and the gauge is reading something that doesn't even matter.

In the end if you keep it misted an have proper FAE you can grow shrooms in any kind of a mono or sgfc or trash can or toilet.

break them up or slice?

Redunk after first flush. If you are going to do a different method I suggest do it from scratch, just my 2¢

Like he said. I would redunk an continue to fruit as cakes.

I've had conversations and read about taking cakes that already have pins then crumbling an casing if it would work.

I feel it would get results just not prolifically. I feel the mycelium has to fight to hard to recover an contamination will eventually take over.

Dunking between flushes is always helpful.

I ended up casing 11 of the cakes using Frank's Organic Jiffy TEK.

And I made a makeshift chamber for the cake that started pinning.
