Space Gas
    #2266916 - 01/23/04 10:45 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I read somewhere that there are giant pockets of gas in empty space around our galaxy.

Does anyone know more about this?

A nebula is what your thinking of. most are just hydrogen, some helium but other may have small amounts of other elements. they are kind of like stellar nurseries, over time the gas comes together by the forces of gravity until its dense enough, and by the gravititational contraction hot enough to become a star.

This is a picture of the Eagle Nebula, zoomed on a location of intense star formation.

You see the little "streamers" that poke out of the main gas cloud? The tips of those are stars in the early stages of development.

No, that's not what I'm talking about.

I was refering to the thin pockets of gas (not very visable at all), not nebulas. They are deep in space where no stars are, outside of our galaxy.

All space has gas in it - primarily hydrogen. Outside of galaxies and thus away from any strong gravitational force the gas would tend to clump together into "pockets" of slightly higher density than the rest of "empty space".

It's not really "empty" at all, you see
