case and jar problems
    #2266602 - 01/23/04 07:35 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

First off my friend is trying to start some jars using a 50/50 mix of coir and BRF instead of straight BRF. Its been about a week and nothing has shown yet and the other jars with just BRF have started colonization. Has anyone else tried this or anything similar? Also His casing which was started with one cake on account of its his first casing worked out ok with 60/40 coir but had horrible fruiting. It went for about 3 days till the mycelium started growing up to the top of the casing layer all over it. It was then lightly patched and put into the fruiting chamber. It Fruited 2 monsters that were about 1.5 grams dry a piece. then the second flush if you could call it that was about 3 singles that were about 2 grams dry alltogether. It was completely patched again because the growth was all over almost on top of the casing layer and now its not fruiting at all. It has been misted within the last 2 days to make up for the water loss but dont know what went wrong or what to do. I need help for the next larger casing. Thanks

5 grams dry from one cased cake...you wont get much more.
plus if you keep repatching then the myc has to use up nutrients to colonise the new casing material.

thats alot of coir IMO, and seeing how its has little nutrients, youll probably figure out on your own its not beneficial to add it. how thick of a casing layer are u using?

About 1/2 inch layer but the mycelium grows up to the top very quickyly in about 1 day. but wont fruit yet. And if i can only expect 5 grams dry off a 1 cake casing whats the advantage of casing, i can get 7 dry off a straight cake.

ive never used BRF so i dont really know about how much yeild is avg. or whatever, i can tell u that its common for me to get a dry zip from 3 flushes of a single cased quart jar of rye.

if the myc grows through the casing, but isnt fruiting, you can try putting it in your fridge for like 12hrs this might shock it into fruiting. but keep in mind sometimes the organism just refuses to fruit, wether because of genetics or just poor growing enviroment.

Ok it got deep scratched down some, misted and put in the fridge. It will go into the chamber again tomorow and ill report back if anything happens. But i still have no answer to my question about the 50/50 coir brf cakes.

For better yield off of casings, try using more than one jar. The thicker the mycelium is, the more yield you will have. And congratulations on yr grow

How much is a dry zip?  We don't know what size bags you're using.
