stalled rye jars
    #2265058 - 01/23/04 06:58 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

this is my first grow,i have both rye and PF jars. Now the 3 rye jars i have showed signs of real fast(3 Days),its been 8 days now and although i do see some grains of rye that have mycelluim on them it does not seem to be spreading.I shook it about 3 days ago,but it almost lookes likeit has grown since i shook it.there are no big spots of myceluim just individual grains, here and there, and an occasional grouping of 3 or 4 pieces.why is it not spreading like crazy? There are no signs of contams, and there is condensation inside the jars,so i dont think they are to dry.

well they are at about 83-84 degrees(if i turn it up to the next level it raises the temp to 90 so 83 is the best i can do).And the PFD jars i have in there are growing(a little slow, but i screwed up and only used 1 innoculation point),but they are growing, just not the rye, like i saiid i do see mycelluim just individual grains here and there

give them more time, your temp is a little low,so they might just be taking a little longer.

i alwasy thought 83 was optimal because the temps inside the jars are 3 degrees hotter then the outside temp, am i wrong?

Whatever gives you the quickest growth is the only answer... 82-86.

Do not shake your jars more than necessary as you will only hinder growth. They should be shaken after innoculation and then once again when there is signifigant mycelial growth and then maybe once more toward the end of colonization just to make sure all the grains are colonizing. Each time you shake it generally takes around a day for the mycelium to re-establish itself and start spreading again.

unfortunatly they have to stay at 83 because my choices are 77 degrees,83 degrees,or 90 degrees,so 83 is my only choice, but do you think that is the problem? If that is it then thats not a problem,im just afraid maybe it means the rye is to dry or something else, and i dont know what to do.
here is how i prepared them because i dont have a PC
I soaked for about 16 hours, rinsed, let drain for about 10 minutes, loaded in jar With polyfill lid, steamed for about 40 minutes, let set over night, next day steamed for about 35 minutes, let sit overnight,3rd day steamed about 70 minutes, let sit overnight, next day innoculated with 4 ccs each GTs,shook to mix up spores coating all rye.

yea they should recover. just be gentle and see what happens. everytime u shake u hafta wait like a day for the myc. to be ready to start colonizing new substrate, so shaking as often as u did isnt making anything go faster.

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
