I made sure that the foil is really loose on half of the jars (just to test it against the ones with the foil on as before). Another one of the loosely foiled jars began to colonize

Do you have any links to the mycelium to agar technique? I know where to find the instructions for making spore prints but not this other technique mentioned.

Also I'm curious how to keep track of updates to a post of mine through this forum system. Is there a way to get email updates or a notification when I'm logged into the site?

Best I've got is;
http://www.shroomery.org/8505/Fatguys-Agar-Technique

I think if you followed the last part about tissue cloning that it would work for mycelium. I've read tecs though for mycelium inoculation and for mycelium water. Do a bit more searching and you'll find them.

I'm still learning the navigation of this site too but what I do is click on the community message board and then click on the "Threads" link in the light blue box that says "Welcome". That will show you all the threads you have posted in (including your own) and you can see by the name and dates if anyone has responded to your thread or posted subsequent to your post in someone else's thread.

This is my first post. My fourth attempt at growing was rewarded with some pinning, today. Wishing I'd read a little more before I started trying.

I don't think perlite and verm are interchangeable.  From what I read, perlite is only for shotgun FC, to create fresh air exhange.  Vermiculite is a substrate that you can use to grow in, to make cakes, roll cakes and make casing layers.  However I'm a noob so I'll let someone else comment.

I'm working on my first batch and have just gotten some growth in my jars!  I used grass seed and have been following Violet's tek. Mostly.  I did commit the #1 noob crime of adjusting the tek to suit my needs.

One big question I have...  I like the monotub design but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket... I like the small plastic container idea.  Can I line the bottom of a monotub with individual containers or does the substrate need to be all in one big piece?  I don't want to risk contaminating the entire thing.  Also I don't think I can commit to not peeking.

If I make a SFC, can a fan in the room help with FAE or will it just dry out the tub?

Nope I'm wrong.. perlite can actually promote pinning when used in a casing layer

My errand boy just got the wrong thing, and I just went with it. I'll say this, though, I went in with six jars, and all six are in the fruiting chamber with lots of pins and zero contams.

I just inoculated 5 half-pint, wide mouth jars of pf tek substrate with cube spores.  I set them on a shelf adjacent to my new shotgun fruiting chamber with 9 samples that recently pinned.  The shelves have less than half a centimeter of empty space between the top of the new jars and the next shelf.  Will this be detrimental to the colonization of my new jars?

I only got one jar that was cultivated out of the 30 I inoculated :/ I've turned off the temperature yesterday. Is it okay to birth this one? http://postimg.org/image/k4a0yn8l1/ Or will it be contaminated?

Also another jar is half colonized. Sort of stuck like that. Can I birth that one too? Is it worth the experience doing it (before another grow), or should I just go for a second grow and be more meticulous?

Far too much information out there to understand what the best tek may be. Any ideas for a brand new guy?

I have everything I need except a proper light. I have 10 spore syringes.

Planning on doing SGFC and using a aquarium heater in water in a container the same size as my incubation container for the jars.

Or is that unnecessary? Can the jars just sit at room temperature?

Jars are better at room temp. just look up PF tek and you have all you need to get a good mushroom grow going there.

Here is my insight...

Inoculation should always be sterile.., Never use a heater in anyway, shape, or form (the reason being is that it dries out the air too much)... If you live in a dry climate., invest in a small room humidifier... Jars do best at room temperature and so do cakes when they are in the FC (fruiting chamber)... I personally use cold water from the tap for my dunks and leave them at room temperature (with a closed lid., but I open the lid a few times during the 24 hour dunk... FAE (fresh air exchange) will help your mushrooms grow bulky and not thin... SGFC (shotgun fruiting chamber) works wonderful and so does PMP (poor man's pod)., I personally use both (But I use a 456 SGFC - Customized design)... I also find the wide mouth 1/2 pint jars better than the talls (I have also used the wide mouth 1 pint jars and it worked but took longer)... Do not mist too., too much and fan as much as possible... Also keep the chamber in the middle of the jar., not near a heater... When inoculating it is okay for them to be in the light., I personally keep them in a closet... And you can flip the jars once they colonize the top onto another jar to "speed up" the bottom colonization (do not worry about contams - I never got one with 100+ jars)., Once birthed., you really do not need to be 100% sterile but sterility does help but not 100%... Inoculation, print making, and syringe making are the TOP 3 sterility priority checks in PF tek... Oh and you can roll pins BUT do not literally roll them nor do you want to cake the vermiculite on them., you can "roll" around them with great results! Dunking pins is always good., and you can even dunk small mushies without rot (in most cases)... Don't roll in perlite  :P

Hope this helps!

You could, but because of the long colonization times of such a large cake it would be very prone to contams.

A q? Like a qt jar? That would be two pints.

A qt takes a good bit to colonize ESPECIALLY if you're trying to do PF tek. Not recommended. You'd likely get contaminants before it colonized.

You mean a half gallon jar?? This probably won't work
