Microwave + Gladware + LGBR = Success? New pic 1/18
    #2235270 - 01/11/04 06:43 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

A friend of a friend of mine's cat was staring at the weak-looking spore syringe on his desk for a while and decided to do a little experimentation. He had read a lot about microwave sterilization on the web and was interested. He had a bunch of those ziplock 4-cup disposable containers lying around, and some long grain brown rice, and somehow these items mysteriously came together in the following manner.

(One container, with a half cup of dry long grain BR and a cup of water, with one small hole punctured in the top. Placed in the microwave on high until they stopped bubbling.) X 8

mere moments after removal from the microwave a sterile bandaid was placed over the holes in the top. The containers were shaken until the rice bounced loosely around inside, then the spore syringe was shaken violently and 1.2 ml of spore suspension was injected into each container through the bandaid. The bandaids were swiped with alcohol and another bandaid was placed over the first to cover the hole. The containers were shaken again and placed in a drawer.

My friend's friend's cat plans to case these with moist sterile perlite once (if) they colonize. He expects mass casualties.

Any thoughts for my friend's friend's cat?

1/15:
well, it's been 4 days and mycelium appears to be taking hold, according to my friend's friend's cat. None of the containers shows contams yet, but most of them are showing a healthy burst of mycelium. One of the containers has a decent amount of mycelium growing on its walls. 2 of the containers have large, fairly dry rice clumps sitting in their middles, so they will probably get contaminated or not colonize at all. The clumps will be removed prior to casing if the rest of the stuff survives. Casing plan revised: coco coir 100% The cat can't decide if he will remove the cakes or leave them in the containers with a top layering. He's leaning toward layering coco on the top of the containers. He hasn't built a fruiting chamber yet. He was wondering if anyone had suggestions.

He gave me these pictures to share.

Containers in their cozy drawer surrounding a laptop power supply for heat.

Mycelium beginning to grow.

1/18:
The cat said, "All of the jars are really taking off except one that has too much humidity. One jar is displaying some ravenous rhizomorphic growth along the side(see pic), and several of the others are at 70% or so colonization. No sign of contams in any of the jars yet. It's now a week from when i inoculated. I'm excited.
The plan for casing is 60/40 coco/verm if i can get it. I'm going to case them in the containers, then fruit them in a rubbermaid. The temp inside the drawer is approx. 78 degrees F."
Here is the picture.

Rhizomorphic growth.

1/23:
The cat says,
"I shook about 5 of the containers a few days ago, and one of them in particular has taken off. (See picture) The entire container is like that more or less, and there is now a bit of "mycelium piss" beaded on the bottom and insides of the container. I am wondering how I will know when to case these... any suggestions?"

uh dont case with perlite, it will contam something horrible. Case with straight verm or coir/verm. I expect 100% casualties.

It kind of looks like last nights left overs. Good luck with it though.

man i hate to say it but all your gonna grow is mold.theres too many things wrong there to list.at a minimum you have to follow the PF tek,its the easiest there is.then after you are familar with that you can experiment, dont waste your spores, they can be expensive

pf tek is not the easiest there is IMO and spores arnt expensive if you make your own. but i do agree, this experiment garanis is doing will probably end in failure, probably stinky failure at that.

This looks like a pretty stable project actally.

Case in the container, and hope for the best. Don't get too upset if they don't fruit very well (if at all). Seems like a fun thing to try if your just playing with some ideas.

I'm just hoping Mr. Kitty gets one healthy shroom to continue the experiment with. If it works, he'll just keep using this method, with solid tupperware instead. He'll use his friend's microwave next time. His is lowwwwww power and took ~30 minutes to adequately cook 2 containers.

The cat says all 8 containers have budding mycelium. Now to wait and see if they contam.

you asked how you would know when they were ready to case:

Answer: When all the rice has been covered in white for 2 or 3 days.
