Drugs and creativity
    #2265592 - 01/23/04 01:40 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Maybe this should be placed in ODD? Oh well...

Alright, we all know that there are certain drugs out there that can really stimulate those creative juices, which can produce some awesome works of art. Many of the most successful artists/musicians/writers etc have been known to experiment with drugs and transfer their experiences into their work.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has a preference of drug that they use when creating art.

For me, the drug depends on the medium:
When creating music with my band, we like to smoke a little :stash: beforehand and it seems to make the ideas flow much smoother and faster.
While drawing, nothing can beat the peak/comedown of mushrooms for original, abstract pieces.

I agree. Smoking a Little bit when playin with my funk band helps bring out the funk, while mushrooms aid me in making electronic music, or just random PS images as well.

Although, what I've always tried to do since the first time I tripped, is to bring images back from the psychedelic world, and be able to get there while sober. therefore, the mushrooms act as a spurt in creativity, but not a necessity for creating good art.
Relying on drugs for creativity is not always a good idea....

Good point man, it definitely belongs here.

Nothing beats smoking weed while playing some music.

I enjoy smoking then sketching up drawings. By smoking, some inhabitions are conquered or your might try a new technique you wouldn't feel comfortable with while sober. It's not a necesity though.

Never had any luck doing much of anything on mushrooms. Maybe i'm not a good enough musician, but music and sound all tend to blend together. I remember one time not even being able to hear myself talk.
And with drawing I find myself miandering around or being too distracted. I've successfully brought images and ideas back to reality though.

For some reason, speed seems to stimulate my creative juices quite a bit.

i draw best on non-psychedelic drugs such as opiates ... psychedelic drugs inspire me for AFTER the trip, but it isn?t enjoyable for me to draw while tripping hard ...

i drew this portrait of levity while on 3 yellow vicodin--

Ya, I agree with that. Some of my best songs have been inspired by tripping, but I've never actually written a song while tripping.

Do you think caffein would help in speeding up thoughts?
Because if so, marijuana combined with caffein could produce some good results.

The reason I posted this is I want to find out the best method to increase not only the quality of thought, but also the speed and fluidity at which they come. I want to find out the best combinations.

My band is having trouble finishing off part of a song we're writing, so what we're doing this weekend is smoking massive amounts of weed and then sitting in a pitch black, silent room and letting the ideas flow. Would caffein, or perhaps some ginseng tea help the process?

I'm not sure caffeine would be enough. You might want to try a stronger stimulant, like dexedrine, adderall, or if you can't get any of those, just go with some truck-driver speed. I haven't tried opiates, but from what some people have told me, those work great as well. But weed is also pretty good. However, the problem for me with weed is that I get lazy on it, and also it seems to amplify my ADHD, so I might start writing a song, but there's a good chance I won't finish it.

the trick to speeding up the creative process is actually to slow down your thought processes, as thought creates tension and anxiety, whereas lack of thought (ego-loss to some extent) lets your lines on the page just flow out of your hand ...

caffeine is too anxiety producing to be effective for most people

I'd also like to add that I wouldn't advise trying too hard to force creativity. Sometimes you're just not in a creative state of mind. I go through stages where sometimes I'll write like 3 songs per week, and other times I'll go for more than a month without writing anything.

Now aren't visual and audio creativity utilizing two different parts of the brain?

Don't the drugs just effect the subconcious decisions we make or interpret.

Like when I'm drawing sober...i have a set of rules somewhere in my brain that guides me. While the intoxicated mind blurs these rules and guidelines.

I zone out easier if im :stoned:.  That way its just me and my art, no other thoughts or distractions.  Creating a piece tends to take a little bit longer but in the end its worth it......well i think it is :smirk:

A little booze and pot can spark up a madman on the keyboard in me -- however, I have to be very careful on the dose.  Too much often times causes me to lose the necessary quick reflexes to improvise on the black & white with a quickness - but when I err on the side of less, it oftentimes gives me much more than if I were sober

Mushrooms are number 1 on my list, but I won't draw while tripping. Vicodin helpes put me in a waking-dream in a sense, where I can just relax and let images and ideas come to me. Sometimes weed does this to me too, but I usually get story ideas from weed and not art.

I think most need to dig into the sub-contious to be effective. Some drugs do this, some don't.

I've heard that alchol helps, but I think that's totally rediculas. But it might be me.

Alcohol usually gives me a lazy, sluggish mind. Not something I'm looking for.
And it just sucks in general.

Are there any herbs out there that can clear your mind or alter it in a way that can benefit the creative process?

BESIDES weed.
I mean like ginseng and ginko biloba and other herbs and roots.
Because what I'm trying to do here is devise an ultra recipe consisting of all sorts of mental stimulants that can work together to produce an effect that would yield maximum results.
