good question. typically the bad stuff is salt and flavorings. if you are unsure, you could pick up this box

its what I've used for a year or so now, no problems.

Could prolly grab a bag of LME fo the price of those potato flakes and have an easier agar mix if you live in an urban area. People love Beer, or so I've been told.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

Yeah, LME is pretty cheap. (I actually bought extra-light)
A brewer supply will have dextrose as well, again, for pretty cheap.

You can also get dextrose powder from feeds store.
They carry it as a water additive for feeding livestock/fighting cocks. Dirt cheap.

Does straight dextrose agar work well? My intuition is that it would suck, but idk.

I got some Giant supermarket brand instant potatoes. It only has dehydrated potatoes and some preservatives like diglycerides. I would suggest looking into the cheapest-ass potato flakes.
On a similar note, I used water I'd boiled potatoes in and although it got super thick with the agar ratio, it works like a charm. So if you're making potatoes anytime soon, save some starch water and stick in a clean jar in the fridge. ain't bad

Well my lack of pressure cooker experience just screwed me. The overflow pressure pin released and was spurting steam from the and from under the handle. I don't know what I did, I followed the instructions and made sure the hole at the top was clear of debris.
I turned off the heat after about 10 minutes of this because I wasn't sure what was happening. now i'm letting it cool off. I'm guessing I will not want to reuse this agar samples and start over?

If they heated quickly there will be some splash-up on the sides, but you could try
Sounds like you didn't have the lid quite right. Be sure there is clearance on the inside below the lid for the other pressure rod or whatever. Try try try again.

It must have been something with the lid. Steam was coming out in one spot under the handle with the overflow pin.
I just took everything out and tried a control test just water. it happened again but i pushed the pin down a couple times and it sprung up, and I can get the pressure to jiggle the top part now so i guess the pin was jammed up and was letting steam out when it wasn't supposed to.
I checked one there wasn't any splashing so I wasn't boiling the agar I think I'll just do it over and get some food coloring in there I don't wanna risk having bad agar.

Omg. I used polyfill for lids and had problems with stacking them.
Stacking problem solved, in a way that should have been obvious with the first batch I made.

^I would put the poly in the side in the future. Less spore load, won't get wet during the run due to pooling condensation, and stack better
What brand of pressure cooker? My mirro has a locking pin on the handle that is supposed to come up when it starts to pressurize. It then vents steam from a part of the handle for a bit before said pin comes up.
If it as actually leaking from the lid, you probably need to stretch your silicon seal gently. I get it wet and sort of stretch it while letting it slip through my fingers. This takes it from smaller than the lid to being flush with the inside. It needs to be done about every 3 runs. I also like to get the lid and seal wet before use. I think this lets the seal slide into position more easily when pressurizing.

Yep it's a mirro 22 qt i thought something was wrong when the steam was coming out of the handle... kind of a strange design because i swear the thing was broken but yeah its all good now my take 2 tomorrow should go smoother.

1 box of flakes lasts a long ass time. I use LME too but potato flakes mixed with dextrose is my go to. Ground dry dog food is another favorite of mine. Its good to have a few different nutrition sources on hand. Changing media is important for keeping cultures healthy in the long run.

We had a beer and wine brewing store open up in town for the first time in many years. I went in to check it out, and buy some DME.
They don't carry DME, only the pre-hopped liquid shit and kits.
So disappoint.

My first batch I put the poly in the center of the lid. Obvious stacking troubles. Putting the hole down in the groove of the lid was *way* better, because it's deep enough that the poly can sit fully in the groove. Didn't consider putting a hole in the side though, that seems like a grear idea as well. I'll probably be making one more batch of these so I can have enough to rotate sets through for isolation purposes, might try the side on those.
