Incubator question....

Sorry to keep asking "dumb questions," but I want to make sure there are not set measurements for creating an incubator using the bins and aquarium heater. I am looking at bins that are 13 and 1/4" tall. Is that tall enough?? I'm only doing this small-time so I will never have more than 10-12 jars going at once. Also, does it matter if they are clear or not?? Thanks again everyone, and I'm sure I'll have more questions along the way

Doesn't matter if they are clear or not really, but usually darker is better, and don't be so worried about the size, anything from 1/2 quart to 96 quarts is fine, just get what works best for you.

You don?t want them clear. They will pin to early if light gets to them. The pump stirs the water so it heats up from all sides and not just the bottom. Seems to work.

Also, thanks Pit Dawg, don't forget the salt and h2o2 additives. This prevents anything unsavory from living in your water.

This guy I know kept finding dead insects in his bins, which probably played a role in introducing the bacteria that grew into little jellyfish-like colonies or whatever. This happened on and off, even with a lot of alcohol and h2o2 (never used bleach because of the smell), until he tried h2o2 and salt.

I run some weatherstrip around the outside of the top bin, and add a little bleach to the water. Cant smell the bleach and after months Ive had no contam problems and never had to refil the reservoir.

You guys are convincing with the bleach. The guy will have to try it.
