Colonizing a bag?
    #2264147 - 01/22/04 11:15 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I was justlooking at some of the bag teks at nansnook's site but im unsure of a few things. Ive got some bags coming in the mail, and from what ive kinda put together about the bags i was going to try this... Fill the bags up w/ a mixture of sterilized verm/brf/H20 like in the pf tek, then take an already colonized 1/2 pint pf jar, break it up, and mix it amoungst the substrate in the bag already. Im hoping this will all colonize, then after colonization i can just cut open the bag at the top and let fruit? I dont have a pressure cooker so i will sterilize stuff by steaming it, and i will be keeping it at the right temp. Does this sound like it might work?...or am i missing a few things? Thanks alot for the info!

The BRF works very well for cakes, however if you have spawn bags, make the most of them. If you can get your hands on some wheat straw and some cow dung ( bagged from store) you can make an awesome bulk spawn run. Not trying to knock the steaming method you suggested, but pressure cooking is the way to go. Try to get one or borrow one from some where. With a spawn bag even with the use of a fully colonized cake there still is alot of surface area to cover and the chance of getting contaminiated are alot higher. The choice is yours.With the straw and dung, mix it together , chop the straw if you can.When the bag fully colonizes, all you have to do is rip open the bag and let it fruit. :smile:bluhoney

Nick I would prepare your spawn bag with brf/verm, then sterilize. let your bag cool, and transfer the spawned brf cake into the bag while inside a glovebox. You don't want to presterilize shit and load into a unsterilized bag in the unsterilized air of your kitchen! Load, sterilize, and transfer in a GB.

The bag wont break open or melt if i steam it? Its one of those free bag samples that i ordered off of the link in the advanced forum. Instead of a glove box, do you think i could use a clear plastic garbage bag (rubbed down w/ some alchohol) with a couple of holes in it to transfer the cake? I was also wondering when i should poke holes in the bag?

well if you are steaming a bag make sur to put a rag around otherwise it will melt againt the pot. and I would judt innoculate the bag its less chance of contams

Yea now that i think of it innoculating would be alot better of an idea...i think i read in a different faq somewhere that you could put a piece of tap somewhere on the bag, rub w/ alchohol, inject, then put another piece of tape over it. Does that sound right?

the bags u got are AUTOCLAVEABLE right? that means you can steam or pc, but put the rag around it like fee sez. innoculation is slower than spawning, thats the big dissadvantage. Liquid mycellial culture could work well, but if you take the 10 bucks and 30 minutes it takes to make a GB, you could do g2g style transfers with your pf jar.

cheap and easy gloveboxes----> http://www.nansnook.com/index2.htm

your innoculation method sounds good to me.
