Any preppers here? (mild to wild SHTF)
    #22638674 - 12/10/15 01:50 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I was wondering, do we have any preppers here? If so, what do you prep for and what are your main prep recommendations?

Me I prep for spasms in the system, basically service interruptions. This can take the form of bank holidays, currency and stock market crashes, hyperinflations, EMPTY STORESHELVES, water/gas/electricity/fuel interruptions.

A chinese curse is: "may you live in interesting times", and indeed times are more interesting than ever.

My prep recommendation is to do SOMETHING, and from that, do as much as you are comfortable with.

If you drink something by the pack, can or bottle, buy it by the box. Thats a prep move cause you'll have a buffer, more to eat and drink in your home than you would otherwise, thus should there be a service interruption, pow, you can bridge a gap and even help others. Thing is, if you buy in bulk you can actually save a lot of money.

I recommend to have enough to eat, drink, and pay with for one month in your house. More is better but a month is a VERY long time for a calamity already and will put you miles ahead of most.

Mostly I have common foods, such as knackebrot crackers, vegetable rich soups, peanut butter, rice, canned beans and the like but also a few items specific for prepping, such as a box of emergency rations (the kind used by the Red Cross in disaster areas), a LifeStraw (get this) a well endowed first aid kit and a second hand camping stove with a bunch of gas cartridges and a bushcraft knife (a Fallkniven F1) and whetstones.

These kinds of supplies also do well in case of personal calamity, such as when you are suddenly broke for whatever reason and need to make it through the month.

Its good to have SOMETHING.

So, whats your prep?

Doomsday preppers are silly.

But being prepared in general isn't.

A large bag of rice is a must, very cheap, and lasts a long time, whether you eat it or store it.
Any sort of tools can be useful as well, especially soldering/welding gear.
Camping gear also works well.

I don't stock my house with any sort of prep things besides things that are useful for other reasons, but I like to keep a tent, mini-stove, axe/hatchet, and water in my car.

Realistic.

I don't think there will be "doomsday" either, but I do expect some bumps in the road. It is LIKELY my euro will meltdown and probably the dollar too. A stock crash, bank run. Its not the end of the world and usually everything is sorta OK in a couple weeks, but during those weeks necessities of life may be incredibly costly, if available at all.

And yes two thumbs up for buying a big bag of rice every so often when it runs out. Cheap as hell ($20 for 50 lbs, thereabouts) and it will keep you alive in case of calamity or being broke. Fast food places often have foodgrade buckets for sauces etc, two big ones of those will hold 50lbs of rice bug free and tidy. Disposable plastic gallon jugs (juice etc) are suitable too.

I don't think I'm a doomsday prepper, but I do have some things stocked up in case of an emergency or natural disaster.
I have
50 gallons of drinking water
20gallons of gasoline
A bunch of candles
Extra blankets
Boxes of canned goods
Flashlights w/extra batteries
An emergency tool kit

chickens. You probably won't starve to death if you have a few chickens, an egg every 1.5 days per chicken was average figure I think.

add a rainbarrel, a lifestraw, and some source of warmth and things can't get too awful. At least in my neck of the woods.

Remember to cycle that gasoline so it won't get stale. If you got 20 gal of gasoline, you might want to invest in a multifuel burner to cook on.

What do you prep for?

Oh definitely, I always cycle through the gas and also put Sta-bil in it for extended periods of storage. Yeah that's what I forgot to mention also is I keep a Coleman camp grill around with extra tanks of propane.

I just prep in case of an emergency or a natural disater.

A lifestraw renders over 1000 liters/250 gallon water free of microorganisms enough to be safe to drink. Its a technology used often in the developing world, and for each you buy, one is given away for free to a person in need so even if you don't need it, you do good with it.

My tax dollars are well spent so why prep when I already pay for FEMA! Why would anyone prep? In a SHTF scenerio FEMA will be there to help with food, water, and plenty of cakes.

If anything catastrophic happened, the first thing I would do is get as far away from other people as possible. In such an event, you would probably be robbed of everything you own. With that said, no I'm not prepared for any global catastrophe.

maybe people wont react the way we think they would in these types of situations, like ime catastrophes really tend to bring out the best in people, like it connects us in a way that brothers or sisters who care for each other would be.

Fairly well prepared. Not nearly as well as I should be though.

We have
- about two weeks worth of fresh water for the 3 of us. Need to get that to like 3 months worth, but we don't have the space.
- about 6 weeks worth of food
- plenty of survival supplies out the yin yang, I've got three separate "kits" I keep one in my car, other two at home, all are standalone and have everything you need and then some. I've been building and refining these kits for over 10 years now.
- Massive first aid/trauma kit, pretty much a Level III field kit that has just about anything you need for medical emergencies short of surgery/hardcore hospital shit. including medications and antibiotics and whatnot.

most people need not worry about a doomsday type scenario, mostly the things you need to prepare for is like a hurricane, a type of temporary disruption in basic services

a week of food and water, and spare batteries is really all most people need to survive such a situation comfortably

if you're looking for something that will come in handy, besides the obvious in a doomsday scenario, may I suggest not buying gold, but bullets and whiskey, both of which will keep you safe and you will have something to barter with for food if your supply should run out

I never considered myself a prepper but after looking at the different lists I suppose I am.  My 'stock-piling' began when I lived fairly deep in the woods on state game land... We used to lose power there alot so I always kept non perishables on hand.

Here is rough list of what I keep at all times...
kerosene stove and 20 gallons of kero.
at least 5 lbs. of coffee (even better than gold during a power outage)
a few boxes of powdered milk
lots of cereal
lots of canned goods such as soup
dried grain, rice, dried soup
chicken and beef boulion cubes.
20 gallons of fresh water.
oil lamps
& porn download to my ipad incase I lose internet!

Great fucking list! I think most people overthink what it means to "be prepared". A well stocked pantry is something everyone should have and most usually do!

Back in 2011, we had a flood here, couldn't drink the water and they really didn't recommend even using it to bath in either, pallets of water were brought in by the truck load, even still have some from Budweiser! since then, I've aquired 2 55 gallon drums stored with drinkable water, it has an additive that keeps bacteria at bay for up to five years, at which time I will dump them, refill, and spend the ten bucks for the additive for the next 5!

I plan to prep soon. I plan to invest in a decent bow/arrows, several knifes and axes very soon.
By next year, I intend to go hiking/camping and traveling across my country, with the bear minimums, to see how I handle it.
That LifeStraw looks LIFE SAVING.. literally. I will probably buy a pack, thanks for that Asante, good to know something like that exists.
With a LifeStraw, you don't need anything else for water purification, right? No tablets or boiling?

Food... still need to think of a plan. I will buy basics such as bags of rice and oats. Anything else seems pretty expensive.

What do you y'all think of this:
http://bertrand.bio/

Although the shelf life is only 6 months, I'll be actively eating the stuff and stocking up regularly.

:super:

For survival food, shelf life is key. Good freeze dried food has a shelf life of 20 years. Something with a shelf life of six months is far from ideal for survival food.

I stockpile a bunch of guns and ammo so I can just go around and raid all the prepared people in my city.

Djeep is better than bic in this situation for 2 reasons that come to mind
1) adjustable flame, so that you can both save fuel when its full and use it longer when its low by turning it up.

2) When empty djeeps sit around for a long time, the fuel will accumulate and you can get a few more uses out of them. This doesn't happen with bics IME.
