What causes those dried off white patches? They look like something resulting from scaring but I have seen a couple form with out prior lasserations. On one of my cacti in the middle of one of the said spots there is a blackening occuring.

tey seem to form soemtimes at the sites of rot. i think it is some form of defense wherein the cactus isolates the site with that woody scab like tissue.

i would like to hear any comments on this from anyone who knows for sure myself.

Does it look like this?

It's an insect that lives under the skin called scale
Mix up some tobacco and alcohol and apply it to the spots, it will kill the bugs. Then they heal to form those white scars.

No those black slimy looking spots aren't it. What I'm talking about I guess is just the scar tissue. In the middle of 1 or 2 of the scars are hardened spots that are a dark greyish color. Some of the scars are also cracking and bubbling up. It's just one cactus in particular that is doing this.
