The president has lots of power and control. I don't know where this idea comes from, but it is false. Sure the president gets credited for things he doesn't do, and blamed for things he has no control over, but that does not mean he doesn't have power. I'm not sure what your angle is here, but it sounds like you may be trotting down towards conspiracy avenue.

yeh guys I think im inclined to agree with Enlil on this but not entirely. I agree that the President is largely a figure head with a whole machine behind the position dictating many of the parameters for the President to work within. The president does have power in the sense that he can make executive orders, has vetoes, and can do alot of military stuff himself.. but the separation of powers itself stops a lot of movement on anything.

I voted for Obama (cue HU calling me a libtard/terrorist etc) but the reality was that he has the media and corporate interests to face with, the military-industrial complex, definite racism, the powerful lobbies (like AIPAC those fuckers), donors, etc etc. When the actions of the president are in line with the interests of corporate america, the media, the military industrial complex etc then the President seems to have more power. The separation of powers has less of a function of scrutiny if there is consensus in all 3 places.

I think Trump would not just be a comical president for everyone to laugh at but i think potentially a very dangerous one as he doesnt seem to know anything so can't make informed choices in the first place. He is reactionary, pompous, arrogant etc etc etc

I didn't say the president has the power to make unilateral decisions (Though in some cases he does). I said that he has power. A lot of power, in fact. More than anyone else in government. It is the only of the three branches that is led by one single person. He can make executive orders, and veto legislation he disagrees with, unless congress has an overwhelming consensus. In this day in age, congress rarely produces a consensus on anything, so the president has a lot of influence in the legislative process.

It's funny that the ACA has been deemed Obama's 'signature legislation', when he isn't even a member of the legislative branch. A lot of credit can be given to the president, however, because he influenced that piece of legislation, and brought it to pass.

The next president will likely have a HUGE impact on the judicial branch for years to come. The president has the power to pull us out of wars, and to dig us into them. He can elect to drop nukes on foreign enemies. That is a LOT of power and responsibility.

No, the president is not just a 'figurehead'. He is a powerful person. Thankfully, he is not a monarch. I wish most of the country would come to understand that voting in midterm elections is just as, if not more important than voting in presidential elections, but that is not the case.

i agree with you aswell BBW

he certainly is powerful, absolutely, but i think Enlil is right aswell that generally-speaking policy doesnt seem to change that much from president to president. partly because there are institutions that run full time regardless of the election cycles so often the course is already set. There is some wiggle room. I would hope that Bernie would be a better president than Obama but it depends on lots of things. Unfortunately, the US political system is way too toxic and completely fucking owned.

If Bernie becomes the candidate, I'll vote for him..

Will you nominate him?

I agree with you also. Somewhere along the line, I think Obama just either gave up, succumbed to some sort of greed/pressure, or he never stood for anything to begin with.

I'm not too knowledgable about the whole fucking process, its a pretty long tiresome one. How does that work? - the nomination i mean.

If Bernie didnt get the nomination then i would probably vote whoever the hell is the candidate for the Green Party.

Like i say, i would hope Bernie does good things but he will get a similar treatment to Obama. People called him a communist muslim when he was anything but. Bernie actually says the term "democratic socialism" so god knows how stupid and vocal his enemies will be - across party lines.

yeh man, i think the machine just made it clear to Obama he couldnt do shit and he just cowered. I suspect he is just following an agenda set by the CIA. I'm thinking more about foreign policy, i dont know much about what hes done if anything nationally except the affordable care act. That just got watered down, retarded and corrupted to shit.

In order to nominate Bernie you have to be a registered Democrat, and vote in the primary election at the beginning of next year. It is different from state to state. Some states, like Iowa, have caucuses, which are different from most state's nomination processes. You should look into how it works for your state.

You vote in the primaries to choose who runs in the general election. So right now Hillary and Bernie are competing to run against the Republican nominee.

It is a annoying process, and it may not always be important to vote in the primaries if you generally like all of the candidates. However, I think a Hillary presidency would be a tragedy. It will drive this country further down the road of corruption.

Bernie's campaign is stronger at this point in the race than Obama's was. He's starting to win over the black vote too, which is key for him.

I don't think that Hillary has this bagged. That's why her buddy in the DNC is going after Bernie.

One other aspect too, is that I believe this primary kicked off a lot earlier than they traditionally have in the past. So maybe Bernie being further along than Obama isn't saying as much, as if he had been campaigning for the same length of time.

If we manage to skate by without Hillary taking the White House, I think she's out of the picture for good!

I would have to say either Trump or Cruz. I read Trump's book "The Art of the Deal" and i definitely think he has what it takes to be president.

oh and he said it too: he wants a laugh. yeah...that's a good rationale.

I'm envisioning aa nomination process in which Trump and Sanders win the popular vote, but the super delegates put Hillary and some other Republican forward, and all he'll breaks loose.

I think it was Orca who told a while ago that maybe the Democrats will bring out Biden and Elizabeth Warren at the last minute??

Apparently Warren is quite popular?

I dont know.

i think what you said it maybe more likely but who would the Republican besides Trump be?

Maybe Ted Cruz. I know the GOP establishment would be thrilled to have another Bush. If this thing ended up being Bush vs Clinton I would shit my pants lol!

America will implode if they subvert our wishes so blatantly. However, if Bernie and Trump both ran 3rd party it would be EPIC!

i think they've both repeatedly ruled that out (running independently) but that doesnt mean much.  yeh man that would be interesting.

I dont think Bush has a chance, nor Cruz. There are like 15 million republican candidates for president at the moment, is that correct? I didn't even know Lindsey Graham, the ass, was in the race until i saw the last debate. Do they keep adding people or was he always in it?

If Cruz got it, i will eat my invisible hat (its a top hat). Man, that would make me so unhappy, mainly because it would make Shroom Detective so happy.

thoughts on the Biden/Warren prospect? I personally don't think much of Biden and i know nothing of Warren, so they are probably still better than Clinton.

If Clinton gets it, who would her running mate be?
