Another neoliberal capitalist politician trying to crush workers?
I for one am shocked.
But the ruling class in France would rather see President Le Pen than a socialist like Melenchon.

It's pretty terrible situation there. There's only one reason to put on a energy tax with almost no economic growth- to make sure the economy and inflation remain dead.

I give the protesters credit in France, when our fiscal austerity and higher taxes for Joe Six-Pack come to the US, I don't expect much resistance at all. You can rest assured, it's coming.

Yeah because Americans are too stupid to understand class politics. When faced with austerity, our reaction is to elect a billionaire real estate mogul.

Macron under pressure here, not good.
I love watching them throw the tear gas back at the police. What do you think would happen if we did that here? We'd probably be shot. Our police can't handle the slightest harm or discomfort without murdering people.

It also helps that police stations across the country burn when cops kill people over there.
Toast your local police department with a molotov cocktail to keep them in check! There's maybe a million cops in the entire USA. The future is ours, if you can count. Can you dig it?

If I saw someone throw a bomb at a police station, I would be out there beating asses with my boys in blue.
As much as cops piss me off, they are good people who deserve some amount of respect.
I bet you been protected by the police many more times than you know about.

You'd be surprised. I'm actually living in a Montreal punk housing complex right now where the cops don't enter without full force and good reason, and we take care of our own just fine.
But we can't all get off on the taste of shoe polish now can we?
If you're interested, check out this video. Bobette is my neighbour, and you can see my home at 0m25s as the train rolls by. It's truly a unique community - I'll take it over the 'burbs or condo living any day. If you like punk music, come by for Fattal Fest in summer.

I know that you have your view, and no amount of reasoning or factual analysis could ever change that, but I'll give it a go anyway. Have you heard of the case in New York, where a man on the subway went on a stabbing spree, killing four people. He stabbed a total of 9 people, and was eventually subdued by a private citizen (Joseph Lozito). Police watched the whole thing, and did nothing. They didn't even assist Lozito in taking the man down, because it is legally not their responsibility. Here is the story on wikipedia.
Quote:
He says he put his life on the line to stop a killer — and claims cops sat back and watched.
But city lawyers are arguing that the police had no legal duty to protect Joseph Lozito, the Long Island dad stabbed seven times trying to subdue madman Maksim Gelman — a courtroom maneuver the subway hero calls “disgraceful.”
My point here is that police are not saving our lives, behind the scenes, every day. The last time I called the police station for basic information about something going on in town, they hung up on me twice. They are lazy, overpaid, arrogant pieces of shit. We need to keep them in their place. By the way, my uncle is a cop. He's a fucking cunt.

Pretty cool!

"When Hillary Clinton warned in an interview this week that Europe centrist leadership needed to 'get a handle' on migration, or risk further fanning the flames of populism, some wondered where she had been the last few years"
Laughable, she is just figuring out the political backlash from shitty Establishment policies such as illegal immigration.

Well this is strange, I was told broke third world migrants flooding into the EU was a very positive social-economic policy for the native population. Why pay for them to leave? Shouldn't they want even more, not less.

When the economics start breaking it starts pouring out into the streets. That's what we're seeing in France. But by all means, invite more broke third world migrants to the already highly volatile situation.

Yeah this protest is about neoliberal capitalism and the inequality it drives. The far-right is out in force trying to co-opt the movement and make it about migrants, but not everyone wearing a yellow jacket will stand for that.
Some drastic shifts in the movement that happened over the past week: they made environmentalist demands targetting the bourgeoisie and industrial polluters, they made demands for more public funding of public services, and several unions and left-wing orgs joined the movement.
Not to mention that the other day a far-right leader got beat up during the protests in Paris and that several banlieues movements (but especially an anti-police brutality POC movement) joined the demos.
It's getting very interesting. It's evidently a working class movement with working class demands, and both the far-right and the far-left are trying to join in. The cynic in me says that people will allow migrants to be scapegoats; the optimist in me says that the neoliberal capitalists of France will soon be facing the metaphorical guillotine.

I stated a long time ago in this thread, once the economics break there won't be a "liberal" to be found.
Once the left finds out there is little to no money coming for public funding, they will look for self preservation. If that self preservation comes at the cost of the migrants, so be it.
Having concerns for the well-being of broke third world migrants is an economic luxury, but once that luxury disappears and so then does the concern.
The EU nations will most likely have to continue with social benefit cuts and higher taxes in the months and years ahead. The resources are not unlimited, at the certain point the rubber meets the road.
