Ps. subaeruginosa temps?
    #2262210 - 01/22/04 07:35 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

this is 1 pint jar (tyvek filter) of popcorn, wheat, millet, and cardboard with 3 pieces of Psilocybe subaeruginosa on agar transfered 2 days ago.
question is what is the best temp to keep this at (first try so not really exspecting it to make it)?
also how close is subaeruginosa to eucalypta.
any tips and advise on how to keep this jar happy would be really appreciatted.

Room temperature, around 20?C.

>how close is subaeruginosa to eucalypta.
From what I know, very close, some scientists even think they are the same species.

this is cardboard and live hard wood from a sweetgum tree cut in to small pieces and simmered, not boiled, for 1 hour. the resulting h2o was filtered

on to
grains the grains were allowed to soak over nite
loaded jars and pc-ed 1 hour @ 15 psi.
will this be helpful for the woodlover myc?
also has anyone else done this before?

Woodlover mycelium grows just fine on just any grain used in the mushroom cultivation. Without any addition of wood-water or anything.

Ive never bothered with the wood water - once its colonised that spawn then you can jsut add it to a mix of aussie native woods - doesnt need to be hardwoods with subaeruginosa and allies. Put some verm in the mix to keep things moist and you can even open the baggies of woodchips and mist them softly to keep it moist if need be. No need to be sterile once the nutrient rich substrate (spawned grain) is already colonised.
Subs and azures i have colonising right now at extremely warm temps - my back room got to 32C last week and it did no harm at all to the subs, eucys, pans, azures or cyans - sped them up a little infact.
Subs and azures have pretty hardy mycelium - and when there colonising, it can get quite warm as it does in Australia without any harm.
Baeocystis on the other hand kept on dying on me because i wasnt keeping it cooler than 25C at the heat of the day.
Anyway, eucalypta and subaeruginosa are both very similar to cyanescens - Pluteus is doing RNA and DNA studies on them right now - but its pretty much accepted that they are binomials of the same species.

It may even turn out that they PREFER US Hardwoods
I think in Australia that they grow on Pine and Eucalyptus etc because they have no choice
Apart from smaller areas of Rainforest along the East coast their range is in areas where the soil is poor (Most of australia is very very old and weathered soils), drought and fire have lead to Eucalypts being a dominant group so to prosper things either adapt and move with it or stay within the rarer forest types

I have seen this group (Subs and the exotic azures) jump readily to Rainforest hardwood mulch, exotic conifers (Thuja) and exotic hardwoods including aromatic ones like Camphor laurel - perhap their tolerance for eucalyptus and other aromatic woods here in australia has helped them adapt to cope easily with the oils that usually put fungi off these woods.

Azures are really quite a suprise with regard to temp - i wonder if theyll fruit in the subtropics though?

the funny thing was that teh azures quickly spread into the pine bark mulch of my garden bed and were fruiting straight off that inches away from any of the original ahrdwoods used.
I think they an excellent candidate for naturalisation, although cyanescens being so similar to subs makes it the top one.

well its done now, has been for over a week now,
need a few opinions,
should an indoor fruiting even be attempted? or would you consider it a waste of spawn? if used as out door spawn will it survive the 90-95F temps in the middle of summer? (gets freakin hot in Alabama).

Yes, for sure. Keep it moist though in summer.

great, well if all goes well , will report back this fall
( damn thats a long wait )

ummm.....this may be one of my dumber questions but is there any chance that if it fruits this fall, will the spores spread and make for the possibility of other patches of subaeruginosia in the distant future, cause dont wanna introduce a species that is not native. the chance of that happening is extremelly low if not at all right?

In nature, the mushrooms spread over distances like that, yes. But the chances are small, yes, but they are there.
I wouldn?t worry too much about this, it happens everyday, by natural and by less natural means.

Ive found that azurescens could handle 36C days as arcana and aucklandii and subaeruginosa without a problem - subs even looks more healthy than usual. Wouldnt fruit then, but will certainly colonise. cyanescens and baeocystis hated the heat though,

I don't know about it being able to survive summer, I'm only a novice at indoors but I've done my fair share of picking and where I live in Tasmania which is a cool to temperate climate which they are said to be native here somehow, they only start to fruit in the beginning of the colder months from the beginning of autumn o  wards and as for woodchips it's true they like eucalyptus but they are more common on radiata pine chips and needles down here so I'd suggest using that if your having trouble finding it I would imagine redwood or any pine variety would work as a substitute.
But as I said I'm new to the growing side of things this is just what I've picked up from hunting occasionally and what I've heard on here
