Blue coloration growing over mycelium.. :( *PICS*
    #2262805 - 01/22/04 02:49 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

1st day - The day before colonization was about to be finished and there was a little substrate still showing on the bottoms of the jars I gave them a little tappy tap on the bottom so the mycelium would have room to grow on the bottom...

2nd day - During daily checkup time I noticed a small blue coloration on the bottom of 3 of 6 jars (smaller then a dime)

3rd day - No change, All growth seems to have stopped of the blue coloration and mycelium growth

4th day - 2 of the jars that had the blueing remained the same, and on one of them the blueing on the bottom has multiplied by at least 4 times..

It looks like its definetly blue, but If it is blue I don't know what the hell it could be.. Possibly dehydration?

A couple crappy pics.. The blueing you'll see is lighter in real life..

If anyone has any ideas about what this is.. Plz let me know

Btw, the jars have been colonizing since December 27th...

And try not to use those pics as a basis for your response to what this is because it looks like the entire picture is blue and its really only the darkest spots in the picture that you can even see in real life..

Both pics are the same exact corner of the jar just the camera is retarded..

I see it, that isn't something I would panic over yet. Isolate this from anything else you have growing, and wait.

You said in the other thread that you had just gave them a whack to seperate them from the glass. This may have resulted in slight blueing or oxidation. So don't toss this out just yet.

Yeap, don't worry too much, it's ok for the mycelium to bruise blue due to some conditions and variables. Keep an eye on it though....

Well the blueing faded a bit but it hasn't spread in the past 3 days.. is it ok if i put it in the fruiting chamber with the cakes that didn't show any blueing? I don't want to spread it if its contamination.. Any1 have any good advice?

If your unsure why risk it?Make a mini grow chamber with a soda bottle for that cake that way you can still fruit it and it wont infect the others if something is wrong.

it's not spreading and its dark blue. HMM

yeah im 99.9% sure its just bruising - put it in with them.. try smelling the blue right before you put it in too- if it smells bad, toss it. if it smells like nothing or anything like licorice, put it in

Cut soda bottle in half, put perlite with water in the bottom half, put cake and cover with top half. You can even drill some holes for air exchange if you want to, just use some common sense
Morrowind, i would have done the same thing but without a close, live inspection, it's hard and sometimes unfair to draw an absolute solution. I leave it to Mike....

true
but what about the smelling part? There are few dark blue contaminants and it is highly unlikely that a contaminant would suddenly appear after shaking a well established grain culture, and just as suddenly stop- even stranger that the now-dead contaminant isn't being decomposed by the mycelium to some extent.

All of the above may well be trivial, but, as far as i know, there is no dark-blue contaminant which smells like licorice

it's totally up to mike, but I just wanted to illustrate how theres next to no chance that it's a contaminant

edit: admittedly, the lack of live-inspection can be limiting, but his observations match up perfectly with what anyone who has seen bruising will see.. again, just trying to encourage him to check on it more closely rather than ask us for a decision

sorry if im confusing or muddling anything up...

Ive had a few oxygen starved jars that turned blue after partial colinization. I had put them in cold storage (tightened lids) and when I took them out I never loosened the lids. Started the same way too..
