Fruiting chamber problems
    #2262372 - 01/22/04 11:13 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have been having problems with my fruiting chamber and not sure why. I'm using a 58 qt steralite container filled with about 3-4 inches of perlite. I strained the perlite of its water and I only seem to get about 80% humidity. There is alittle moisture on the inside walls but not much. Even using masking tape to tape the lid airtight didn't raise the humidity. I did test my hydometer and made sure it was working correctly and to my surprise it was right on. Should I try adding more water till I see the perlite floating on the water?

reduce the perlite to about 1.5 inches and keep some water in it.

Usually I put 3cm of perlite with 1 ~ cm of water...
I've always been reachin' high values (amost 100 %), remember to
not puttin' too much water (till the perlite will float). This may
cause contamination or smthing reaches the cakes. :frown:

I lowered the perlite level down to around 2 inches. Then I added some water since I thought it was to dry. I checked on things about 9 hours later and noticed I have pretty much the same results about 78% humidity. I had even put a second hydometer in just to make sure there are no false readings. I do think my water level might be to high though. It was more than half way past the perlite. Im sure the container wasn't losing moisture since I taped it up again so no air could escape. Someone had to have the same problems as me having low humidity. I do have a double airpump I could use as a last resort to help increase the humidity, but I rather fix the real problem.

ok! perlite works by wicking water in and transpiring it into the air, sooooo either use a few inches of damp perlite, (sprayed when it gets dry) or 3 - 4 inches of dry perlite with about 1/2 - 1 inch of water in the bottom. this will max your perlite humidification. As for the lid, if it's small enough you can wet the rim of the terrarium and cover with plastic wrap and put the lid back on. this will keep the wet air in.

If you have an airpump hook it up to a tube that goes through the lid to a bubble stone in the perlite. No fanning and your humidity should be high! If it's still to low put the bubble stone into a bottle of water, and put that into yer terrarium. A pump with a bubble stone airating the water layer at the bottom of your perlite should do nicely with humidity and gas exchange! Hope that helps, PM if you have any probs. peace!

I really hate to keep posting my problems with humidityim getting but im really stuck. I added my double airpump with 2 18" airstones under the perlite. I also added a single airpump that I have in a bowl of water for more humidification. Anyway I was feeling confident that this will help. To my surprise it got no better. I currently have 4"of perlite with a good 2" of water. The moisture on the walls is drying. I really getting concerned since my cakes are in there. Las I looked humidity was around 78% with both hydometers. Thanks
