I'm considering buying a hydra pod but before I do...
    #2259927 - 01/21/04 01:27 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

are there any competitors out there I should buy from instead........frankly I'm a lazy bastard...and nothing anyone says is gonna make me change my mind on an automated system...so I'd like to know which ones are the best....and links would be greatly appreciated...I've grown once before using the pfsubstrate technique.  I was one of the lucky few....first time I ever ate shrooms was from my first grow ....so 2 years later, I wanna give it another shot...but I'd like to know about any other systems available...benefits, drawbacks, etc.  Thanks!

Well before you buy a Hydro pod, you should do a search for "Poor Man's Pod" also known as "PMP".

It's the same idea except you build it yourself for 20% of the cost.

First off, I understand being lazy. I'm lazy too. I just don't like wasting my money.

Just know that you *are* wasting money. You can build a similar system only *waaaay* better for less cash.

The point of the pods are to provide a perfect environment for fruiting the mushroom. The Hydra-Pod (tm) costs $170 bucks (plus shipping). Lets just look how much it would cost to build a better system PLUS a separate incubation chamber:

4x big rubbermaids @ $5 each = $20
2x aquarium heaters @ $15 each = $30
1x aquarium pump @ $20 each = $20
1x aquarium tubing @ $5 each = $5
2x bubble wands @ $10 each = $20
Enough red lava rock to fill 4-5 inchs @ $25 = $25
1x plexglass @ $10 = $10

Total: $130

Toss in an hours worth of work to put it together (much less really) and you're set with a better setup for much less cash.

If you need help putting it all together just let me know.

Like I said before, do a search for Poor Man's Pod. I beleive the thread your looking for will be started by a member name of "Magash".

Well, as for instructions - the PMP thread will get you there.

The reason for 4 rubbermaids is because 2 will be used for the PMP, the other two for the incubator. Both will be setup the same way, the PMP will just have more gear in it.

The idea is to put a "tub-in-a-tub" - the bottom tub will have water and the aquarium heater in it set to the temp you want. The top tub then goes inside the bottom. The inside of the top tub will thus be a nice even temp. The incubation chamber will be a balmy 80-85 degrees and the fruiting chamber (the PMP) a cooler 70-75 degrees.

You'll innoc your jars, stick them in the incubator (with a towel on top to keep out light) for a few weeks, then put them over into the fruiting chamber to, well, fruit.

All you have to do with both is keep the water levels up if they go down an clean them if you get contams. (Depending on your setup you may need to mist inside of the fruiting chamber on occasion as well)

ok, u mention a tub on a tub.....how is the tub that is to be on top (for the pmp) gettin the moisture from the water below if the top tub is covering the bottom one? I'm sorry, i'm a bit confused on that.

The tub in tub is for an incubator. Which you never even asked about. Don't get side-tracked, just go build that Pod!

You just need one tub for your pod... unless you want it to incubate too... room temperature is usually fine for your fruiting chamber.

I generally use, and recommend using a tub-in-a-tub setup for both the incubator and fruiting chamber. Why? Because shit happens and a tub-in-a-tub allows you to control the heat pretty precisely and thus grow in your basement, in a shed, in a cool closet... where ever you want and not have to worry about temperature fluxuations.

In my experience the two factors that most lead to slow or stalled growth are screwy humidity and/or temperature - a PMP built with a tub-in-a-tub gives you pretty damn precise control over both.
