Antibacterial handwash ?
    #2262068 - 01/22/04 05:55 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,
I sometimes use wetting agents in my spore water, to help stop
them forming into clumps, and was just wondering about using an
antibacterial handwash i have as the wetting agent, only I know
little if anything about chemicals, and what could or might not
affect spores.

The most common antibacterial sopa over here contains:

Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Propylene Glycol, Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Parfum, Triclosan, Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile, Phenoxyethanol, Citric Acid, CI 42051.

and i was just wondering if any of you clever folk know off hand
if any of these ingredients are harmfull to spores.

I'll prob do a little experiment anyway, but was looking for a little imput.

I'm only thinking of trace amounts per syringe, like how
i add wetting agents now is to add a tiny amount to a cotton bud, and
just touch the water surface with it, and just thought that an antibacterial wetting agent would have a little added protection.

Wow, that is one heck of a long list of checmicals to be exposing spores to.  Who knows what all those surfactants and antimicrobials might do to your little friends. :syringe:

If you were interested in contamination protection, how about a trace amount of antibiotic, like gentocin?  These AB's do not seem to affect spore germination or mycelial growth of most mushroom species when included in agar recipes.  They'd probably be ok on spores, at least for short-term storage.

Cool good impute, cheers.
I supppose I just like using what i already have
Just trying things everyone can get with ease, but i see your concerns
about the amount of different chemicals, maybe i should look for a plainer
brand, as the one i have is also moisturising, so most of the chems are
just usless extras.

Does anybody know what chem in that list is the actuall antibac?

I know that triclosan is a topical antimicrobial for sure, and the big long triammonium up there is a quarternary ammonium compound methinks, so it is bound ot have antimic. properties too.

Check this link on triclosan, it might scare you:

oi, it's the same with everyother freakin antibiotic...it may do this it may do that...and of course if you use an antibiotic you risk the chance of creating a superstain of bacteria...but everything does that. why do you think they keep trying to find stronger and stronger antibacterials...

we did an experiment in my bio class: we took some agar and put a little ecoli on it. then took that and put a little ampicillin on it...most of the ecoli colonies died(how sad). however, some did not. we then took those still alive colonies, and put them on some fresh agar that had a just a little ampicillin in it. most of those soon began to die. but lo and behold! we have a few cells that survived and start to thrive. we then transfer this to an new agar plate with even more ampicillin in it...well and to make a long story short. we got a strain that was pretty much immune to ampicillin. it's the same with all antibiotics . it's why genetic variation is so cool :P

heh but yeah , that was prolly off topic.
